While Hollywood seems to be gaining ground at the Korean box office in 2008, a growing number of Korean stars are invading Hollywood's home turf this year, bringing Korean talent into view on the world stage. Local celebrities such as Jeon Ji-hyeon, Lee Byeon-heon, Jung Ji-hoon ("Rain"), Jang Dong-gun, and Korean-American Daniel Henney are currently filming or have already wrapped roles in major US studio productions.

Actress Jeon, going by her English name Gianna Jun, recently completed the shooting of her lead role in "Blood: The Last Vampire", a US – Hong Kong co-production set in the Tokyo of 1970. Jeon plays Saya, a vampire working for a covert US government agency that hunts and destroys demons. She is assigned to a military school where she must find out which of her fellow classmates is a demon in disguise.

The English-language horror-thriller will be model-turned-actress Jeon's Hollywood debut. Rising to celebrity status with her 2001 Korean feature...| More

At a recent film award ceremony, Han Ye-seul made a small scene. While singing a song on the stage in a tubetop dress, her innerwear came into view for a moment, but there's no going back since it was a live broadcast.

Han did not give much thought to the incident, but Korean online users, many of whom are obsessive about anything and everything related to beautiful actresses, launched a blame game, and their initial target was Han's fashion coordinator.

When things get ugly like this, fashion coordinators are likely to take all the blame. But Han did not back down; instead, she vigorously defended her staff in public, a fresh development that eventually made big headlines in entertainment sections of major local dailies and online media.

"She is a really hard-working person, and things happen, you know, so I didn't have any hard feelings about her or the incident on stage", said Han in an interview with The Korea Herald on Wednesday. "And I don't think it's shameful or anythi...| More

After making himself a familiar face in Korean living rooms in 2005 by starring in MBC TV drama "My Lovely Sam Soon" ("My Name is Kim Sam-soon"), the Korean-American model-turned-actor Daniel Henney finally received official recognition for his life-changing decision to leave the US and settle in Korea. During the 12th Pusan International Film Festival earlier this month, Henney was awarded the 3rd annual Premiere Rising Star Award for his moving role in his second feature to date, "My Father" (2007).

Released locally on September 6th, the feature is about a Korean adoptee named James (played by Henney) who, in order to search for his biological parents, enlists in the US Armed Forces stationed in Korea. He eventually finds his father who turns out to be a condemned man sitting on Death Row. The 27-year-old American-born Henney is the son of a Korean adoptee, his mother, who left Korea at an early age, becoming a naturalized American citizen and marrying an American of British...| More

The Asian Film Market was again bustling in its second year although buyers tended to window-shop and take notes for later. A number of Korean films were picked up mainly for TV/DVD rights. Korean sales agent Cineclick Asia sealed a number of deals, selling all rights to KIM Ki-duk's "Breath" to Saudi Arabia-based Ghassan Production and Distribution for the Middle Eastern territories.

The company also picked up DVD/TV rights to KIM's "The Bow" and "3-Iron", along with "Family Ties" ("The Birth of a Family"), "Red Shoes", "Fighter in the Wind", "Love Me Not", "Seducing Mr. Perfect", and KIM Ji-woon's "A Tale of Two Sisters" from Cineclick. More TV rights went to Japan's Nettai Museum for horror films "The Red Shoes" and "Acacia" along with "The Wolf Returns" and "Mission Sex Control". Meanwhile Hungary's Cinetel bought TV/VOD/Video rights to KIM Ki-duk's "Samaria", "Red Shoes", and "A Tale of Two Sisers".

In a major deal, CJ Entertainment sold a four-feature package to buyer Sple...| More

Controversy greeted the release on Thursday of "My Father", a film inspired by a true story about an adopted child whose biological father turns out to be a first-degree murderer on death row. The murder victims' families opposed the screening, and revelations that the film's star Daniel Henney lied about his educational background stoked dispute. That did the film no harm: it topped this week's box office sales, drawing more than a quarter of moviegoers. The Chosun Ilbo spoke with Daniel Henney and Eron Bates, the real man behind the film's gripping story.

-You watched "My Father" with Daniel at the premiere. How did you like it?

Bates: "It was simply fantastic. I'm a bit of a tough guy and I rarely cry, but after the movie, I was crying my eyes out. Daniel was perfect. It's an honor that he played my character".

-Daniel, you said you put your heart into the movie.

Henney: 'Yes, because my mother was adopted too. If I understood my mother about 75 percent before, now with ...| More
