Synopsis

In a cold dark shaded anatomy classn room, 6 student prosectors are taking part in anatomy class Sun-hwa, Ki-bum, Joong-suk, Eun-joo, Ji-young and Kyung-min are smart medical college freshmen in the same anatomy class. Sun-hwa smart and confident; Ki-bum born to be a team leader full of confidence, Joong-suk son a hospital owner; Kyung-min too weak to be a doctor; Ji-young sexy and haughty but poor at study, Eun-joo studious nerd. They are competing with each other to be the best surgeon, but are strongly tied with fellowship as a team. In the first class, they try to suppress their fear and approach the cadaver that is waiting for them…. The first meeting with a deadly beautiful cadaver, and their nightmare begins. The cadaver is assigned to them, right after the first class. They suffer from ghosts and hallucinations. After several accidents and death of some team members, they start to realize something horrible is coming for them. They do their best to survive and find one clue: these accidents all have something to do with the female cadaver.

Daytime Drinking North American Rights Sold

In what can be seen as a breakthrough for independent Korean cinema, local sales outfit Fine Cut sold all North American rights to NOH Yeong-seok's "Daytime Drinking" during the Asian Film Market (Oct. 3 – 6) at the Pusan International Film Festival.

Japan's Eleven Arts signed the title and plans to release it in up to 30 cities across the US and Canada. Noh's film recently screened in Toronto, Locarno where it won special mention and the NETPAC award, and Jeonju where it won the JJ Star Korean Cinema Award.

The low-budget film, made for US$ 10,000, has already recouped its initial investment in festival prize money. The film has yet to receive a domestic release.

Also during PIFF's Market, Korea's Mirovision sold remake rights to KIM Tae-sik's 2007 feature "Driving With My Wife's Lover" to US production company Circle of Confusion. Actor-turned-snapper can't live without film

Actor and photographer Jo Min-ki is the type of man who loves to share his interests with others.
He prefers to travel alone to unfamiliar places and he often falls in love with the people he meets and scenery he sees.
The photos he brings home help him to share his travel adventures with others.
Jo's first camera was an old-fashioned classic, a non-digital shooter. It pales in comparison to some state-of-the-art equipment that many professional photographers use today, but this doesn't lessen his passion for his art.
Over the past 14 years, Jo has created a significant portfolio of pictures that add insight into the different stages of his life.
The public know Jo best through TV shows and soap operas. He began taking photographs in 1994 as a budding actor and has two solo exhibitions under his belt so far.

"The Cut" Combines Talent and Promising Actors

Egg Films and Chungeorahm Films released their horror summer title "The Cut" (Haeboohakgyosil). The film is directed by SON Tae-woong and the cast features the young actors HAN Ji-min and ON Joo-wan.

The film depicts medical students who one by one start to meet their death when they start dissecting a corps of a mysterious beautiful woman. The film tackles the horror genre from a visual imaginative angle rather than relying on gore.

SON is both a director and writer and he penned BONG Joon-ho's international breakthrough "Barking Dogs Never Bite" (2000). HAN has already a long career in television dramas. ON was recognized for his leading role in JO Chang-ho's 2006 international film festival favorite "The Peter Pan Formula". He also played supporting roles in the gangster film "Bloody Tie" and the martial arts film "The City of Violence".

Medical Fiction and Medical Reality

Horror films help entertain people suffering from the hot weather, and that is why summer theaters are packed. This year, hospital settings are the most dominant theme in this genre.

Korean films in this genre are catching our attention these days. In "The Cut", a dead body wakes up and walks around. "Return" depicts the birth of a serial killer who regains consciousness during surgery. In "Black House", a psychopath kills innocent victims and shows no remorse.

A movie often exaggerates and distorts facts to some degree. Consequently, the viewers may accept incorrect medical information as true. Now, let's check what is medically true and what is not as depicted in these films.

Young dead bodies: not "eligible" for medical purposes-

In "The Cut", most of the cadavers are young female bodies. A specially manufactured "cadaver" was used to highlight their vividness. The artificial bodies show blue blood vessels, and exude liquids upon the touch of a scalpel.

The elements making up Korean horror films are growing more diverse.
What's in style this summer is the medical theme.
First up this week is the Korean horror film "The Cut".
The story revolves around six medical students who begin their much-anticipated human anatomy experiment.
But when their experiment begins, they soon find out their lives have changed for the worst.
The six are haunted by the same nightmares and hallucinations, seeing a weeping woman and a doctor whispering death.
One by one, the medical students start to die.
The remaining students track down the cadaver's past since they believe it was a victim of a serial murderer.
