They're the silent heroes of the film industry, defying death with leaps off bridges and high-speed car chases. But as substitutes in action flicks, stuntmen are always behind the scenes.
No longer. In the recently released independent documentary film "Action Boys", stuntmen are the heroes.
"Many people think that stuntmen lead gloomy, miserable lives", said director Jeong Byeong-gil, "so I wanted to tell the world that their lives are cheerful and bright".
Jeong himself was an action substitute before he became a director in 2005.
"Action Boys" is based on "Standing on the Edge of a Knife" (2005), a 38-minute documentary Jeong made about his fellow stuntman, Tae-yong, at the Seoul Action School in Paju, Gyeonggi. The school trains action substitutes in martial arts.
Action Boys further explores the same theme. The 110-minute documentary follows the lives of five students at the Seoul Action School - Kwon Kwi-deok, 28; Kwak Jin-seok, 26; Sin Seong-il, 27; Jeon Se-jin, 2...| More

A paler Song Kang-ho said, "It took 23 hours and 50 minutes to come to Martinez Hotel from Pusan where I was filming "Thirst"". It is his second year coming to Cannes, last year with "Secret Sunshine"and this year with "The Good, the Bad, the Weird". He hopes that "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" can be a movie to revive the Korean movie industry from its slump. It has a screening on the 24th out of competition.
On the 23rd, Song Kang-ho consented to an interview for forty minutes on a hotel terrace, and continued to share fun stories while having dinner. He was tired, but he willingly answered questions about "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" and "Thirst" for the Korean reporters that visited Cannes. His hearty laughter spread across the café.
-This is your second year in a row at Cannes. Your current thoughts and feelings?
"Secret Sunshine" and "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" both have weird themes, and I'm glad that I was able to attend the most famous film festival.

'The Show Must Go On' a vehicle for Korean star's amazing talent
Kyu Hyun Kim (qhyunkim)
Kang In-gu (Song Kang-ho, "The Host", "The Secret Sunshine") is a middle-rank boss of a criminal gang. Recently, he is suffering from chronic fatigue, taken to falling asleep while caught in a traffic stop. His business is not exactly booming. His attractive wife Mi-ryung (Park Ji-yeong) has had it with his broken promise to open a fruits and vegetables shop after washing his hands from racketeering and extortion business. His equally attractive teenage daughter Hee-soon (Kim So-eun, "Someone behind Me") wishes he were dead. His supposed colleague Sang-jin (Yoon Je-moon, "The Host", again typecast as a mean thug) is looking for a chance to stick a knife in his gut, both figuratively and literally. The only sympathetic figure around him appears to be his childhood buddy Hyung-jin (Oh Dal-soo, "Old Boy") who now works for a rival gang.
