  • "Nameless Gangster" released in North America

    2012/03/28, Source,
PREFACE "My reason for wanting to tell a story from the '80s is because I feel that the current societal climate is very similar. About 3 years ago I got a feeling that the era of my deceased father was suddenly coming back, an era in which everyone's good will is only reserved for their own survival and well being. But like my own father, I did not see these people as selfish fools, but sympathized with them. I wanted to portray these characters not as criminals who were on the wrong side of the law, but as people who tried their best to survive and thrive despite the conditions they were in. People innately follow the times they live in and those who ride it architect the next generation. The '80s in South Korea were an incredibly volatile decade in which a single person's decision could change the direction of an entire era. Following men who lived through that decade, I wanted to show that the eighties had more dramatic appeal than any other decade. I wanted to inquire whether it was the times that were changing the people, or if it was the people that were changing the times. Most of all, I hope that the audience can laugh and identify with these men who lived like kings in the face of loyalty, betrayal, and ambition".,...More
  • Controversial director tackles corruption in 'Nameless Gangster'

    2012/02/17, Source,
Actor Ha Jeong-woo, second from left, plays a gangster boss, and Choi Min-sik, third from left, plays a customs officer who falls in with a gang in the film "Nameless Gangster", which has topped the box office since its release earlier this month. Provided by Showbox Mediaplex Corruption is the big issue at the box office these days as films highlighting serious issues and based on true stories gain traction. Recent releases such as "The Crucible", which exposes abuse in a school for deaf children, and "Unbowed", a film about a professor who goes up against the judiciary when he is accused of shooting a judge with a crossbow, have won audiences over and sparked discussion about problems in society,...More
  • A Wild Fugitive

    2011/07/30, Source,
By UNA Beck Whoosh. What can it be? It sure isn't a 4D movie in front of my eyes but as the man appears on screen a thick fog surrounds me. The scent of testosterone and perspiration and the feverish air rising from the mid-summer city asphalt, was not yet discomforting at all. From his first appearance, an Asian man wearing a sweat-soaked shirt with greasy hair that was probably never washed for quite a few days captures our eyes and nose, no!, our entire senses. In the film "Never Forever" (2007) co-starring Vera Farmiga, and Ha Jeong-woo, who plays Ji-ha, an illegal immigrant living in New York, who's willing to sell his sperm for 300 dollars to a white woman named Sophie, a rich woman who wants to give birth to an Asian baby,...More
  • Actor chases a dream and wins

    2011/06/16, Source,
'I didn't want people to see me as the son of Kim Yong-geon and that's why I use a stage name. It was my belief that I had to prove myself on stage'. Actor Ha Jeong-woo has been invited to the Cannes Film Festival four times including this year. Outside of acting, the 33-year-old loves to draw and write. Most recently, Ha published a book last month that features his paintings and essays. [JoongAng Ilbo] Actor Ha Jeong-woo could have gone the easy route. His father, Kim Yong-geon, is a well-known film and television actor who could have ushered him into the business. But Ha chose to make it on his own. He changed his name, studied theater in school and eventually entered film. Since then, he has become known for playing strong, unconventional characters, including a serial killer in the hit film "The Chaser" (2008), a male prostitute in "The Moonlight of Seoul" (2008) and a ski jumper who is an adoptee in the 2009 film "Take Off",...More
