MoMa to screen works of award-winning director Kim Ki-duk

New Yorkers will be able to taste a series of artistic Korean movies made by director Kim Ki-duk from Wednesday (Apr. 23).

The Department of Film at New York's Museum of Modern Art, or MoMa, will hold a screening of the works of award-winning moviemaker Kim Ki-duk, 48, who has directed artistic yet controversial films since 1996.

During the exhibition at MoMa's Theater 1, co-organized by the Korean Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Korean Film Council, and supported by the Korean Film Archive in Seoul, movie lovers will be able to take in a total of 14 movies directed by Kim, which will include several features never before seen in the United States, according to MoMa.

Kim is a self-taught maverick filmmaker whose works have impressed international cinema industry with a focus on symbolism and his strong sense of motifs and intensity.

Rain in "TIME" Magazine for 3rd Consecutive Year

Actor and singer "Rain" was asked for an interview with the weekly U.S. journal "TIME", according to J. Tune Entertainment.

Every year, "TIME" magazine presents a select list of "100 of the World's Most Influential People" and currently, Rain has surpassed Britney Spears on the online voting site, "2008 Time 100". The request for an interview comes from the "TIME" video web coverage segment, "10 Questions".

This is the third consecutive year that Rain has been linked to "TIME". The Hallyu star was chosen for the "TIME 100" list in 2006 and walked the red carpet with powerful figures such as U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and movie mogul Jerry Bruckheimer.

"Beautiful" Opens on Valentines Day

Currently screening in the Panorma section of the Berlin International Film Festival, JEON Jae-hong's dark feature debut, "Beautiful", will open in Korea February 14, through indie-distributor Sponge. The original script for the film was written by none other than prolific auteur KIM Ki-duk, who served as JEON's mentor.

"Beautiful" is the story of Eun-yeong, a lonely and distraught young woman, played by CHA Soo-yeon ("For Eternal Hearts"). She is the victim of her own stunning beauty, becoming the object of every man's desire and the source of women's jealousy. She tries in various ways to ruin nature's gift from binge-eating to starvation. Along the way, a police officer, who has been watching her, falls deeply in love with her.

Singer-Turned-Director's 'Fearless' Endeavor

The nickname "Little Kim Ki-duk" after one of Korea's most celebrated filmmakers tails director Jeon Jae-hong -- especially now that his feature debut piece "Beautiful", based on an original story by Kim, won him a ticket to Berlin. But the nickname doesn't seem to bother the 30-year-old, who fearlessly jumped into the movie industry only three years ago.

"I like being called `Kim Ki-duk Two"', he told The Korea Times last week before leaving for the 58th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), which runs through Sunday. "Beautiful", which was also produced by Kim, is being shown in the out of competition section, Panorama.

Top Stars Join KIM Ki-duk's 15th Feature

Controversial director KIM Ki-duk has cast South Korean leading actress LEE Na-young alongside one of Japan's top actors, Joe Odagiri, in what will be his 15th feature film. Titled "Bi-mong" ("Sad Dream"), the new project began shooting January 4 in Seoul and is scheduled to wrap on January 25.

Much interest is being given the new project as actress LEE is one of Korea's most adored stars, taking memorable roles in such films as "Maundy Thursday" ("Our Happy Time") (2006) and "Someone Special" (2004). Paired with Odagiri (Tokyo Tower (2007)), a favorite with women across Asia, the film carries much commercial potential despite the generally cold reception KIM's films receive in his home country.
