Pretty boys overtake the screen... this fall is the season for them

After the female-dominated last year and after this summer filled with men, it will be the season for pretty boys.

The faces are brilliant.

Kang Dong-won, who had stayed inactive after "M", will come back with "The War of Flower" Director Choi Dong-hoon's "Jeon Woo-chi". He is the first of the pretty boys, and will play a character who is born again into modern times after being trapped in a picture due to his wasteful life.

What happens when you've been dating for six years? Kim Ha-neul and Yoon Kye-sang show that the initial sparks are long gone but a deep sense of familiarity settles in, through the upcoming film "Lovers of 6 Years", slated for release Feb. 5.

During a press conference last week at a Hongdae club in northern Seoul, director Kim Hyeon-jin explained, "I wondered how it would be for couples that date for a while, say six years. After six years, you grow so comfortable with each other that some break up and some overcome this and get married. I think six years becomes a bit of a turning point".

"I was able to relate very much to my character, who is my age and generation", said the lead actress. "I think that when men date someone for a long time they tend to unintentionally hurt their girlfriends with their insensitivity", she said. "A simple `I'm sorry' can easily make up for it, but they don't seem to know".

Actor and model Kang Dong-won, 26, is no longer just a pretty boy. In Lee Myeong-se's recent psychodrama "M", Kang plays a writer named Min-woo who journeys back and forth between reality and fantasy in search of his first love Mi-mi, played by Lee Yeon-hee.
Compared to Kang's previous work, films such as "Temptation of Wolves" (2004) and "Duelist" (2005), "M" seems less naturalistic in tone. The actor's pretty face is hidden behind black-rimmed spectacles and his hair is shaped like the letter M. The story's blurry visual effects create an atmosphere that reflects Kang's psychological quest.

'Voice of Murderer' heard at box office

Director Park Jin-pyo's "Voice of Murderer", based on a real kidnapping that took place in 1991, sold 1.46 million tickets in its opening weekend since its release on Thursday, pulling off a better-than-expected performance despite public uneasiness about the sensitive topic.

The box-office figure was even better than "Tazza: The High Rollers" ("The War of Flower"), a gambling drama that attracted 1.16 million viewers in its opening week last year. "Voice of Murderer" secured some 450 screens across the nation initially, and thanks to the positive results, the film added about 50 theaters this week.

The film draws strength from big-time stars such as Seol Kyeong-gu ("Silmido", "Peppermint Candy") and Kang Dong-won ("Duelist", "Too Beautiful To Lie"), while benefiting partly from the dearth of new blockbusters.

"I first met Dong-won and saw his sad eyes. And that was that", said director Lee Myung-se.

It didn't take long for actor Kang Dong-won (24) to be cast as the lead in Lee Myeong-se's new film "Detective". After all, the character's name is supposed to be "Sad Eyes".

At the Seoul Studio Complex in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, on May 27, director Lee Myeong-se was shooting the final scenes of his period film "Detective"-his first movie in six years since "Nowhere to Hide".

On the 500-pyong outdoor set colorfully decked out as a Joseon-era marketplace, "Sad Eyes" Kang Dong-won stood in a green-tinged black robe with a long sword slung at his side. Although he was 186cm tall and his wig seemed to cover his eyes completely, he looked "pretty". So much so that a nearby staff member exclaimed, "Oh dear, he's even prettier than the female lead, Ha Ji-won..".
