Bada to Attend the 2008 Korean Film Festival in Vietnam

Singer Bada, formerly of female pop group S.E.S., has been invited to attend the 2008 Korean Film Festival in Hanoi, Vietnam, held to celebrate the 16th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Vietnam. She will perform in the opening ceremony at the festival to be held at the National Convention Center in Hanoi from May 8th through 10th. She plans to give a powerful and spectacular performance to the Vietnamese fans of Korean culture.

The 2008 Korea Film Festival will open with "Forever the Moment", based on the true account of the Korean women's handball team on their way to win silver in the Athens Olympic Games. Other films to be featured at the festival include "Welcome to Dongmakgol", "Tube", "Marathon", and "Hwangjin-y - Movie - 2007". The presentation of such box office hits is expected to promote cultural exchanges between Korea and Vietnam.

Horror film 'Into the mirror': invitation to the 23rd Fajr International Film Festival

As director Kim Seong-ho's horror film 'Into the mirror' is invited to the 23rd Fajr International Film Festival to be opened on Jan. 31 in Teheran, Iran, interest in Korean films in the Middel East countries is expected.

Movie 'Into the mirror' is screened in the 'Spiritual Cinema', a competition part to which a total of 13 films are invited.

Into the Mirror, supported by the New Directors in Focus program at the Pusan Film Festival in its early development stage, is an intriguing debut film by Kim Seong-ho, a former architect whose deft manipulation of the spatial and optic dimensions of the film results in its unique and memorable look and atmosphere, overlaid with a layer of modernist austerity.

Yoo Ji-tae (Old Boy, Attack the Gas Station!) plays U Young-min, a cop-turned-security chief at a department store, investigating a series of inexplicable suicides.

'Singles' Stars Take on New Romantic Comedy

Uhm Jung-hwa and Kim Ju-hyuk were part of the ensemble cast of "Singles", last year's hit film about being young and unmarried in Seoul. While both actors played a significant role in the light romantic drama, their characters were connected only by a mutual friend and didn't appear in a single scene together.

As romantic opposites in the new comedy "...Hongbanjang (Mr. Handy)", the two find themselves in a much closer, and often cantankerous, relationship. In the film, opening March 12, Uhm plays a young dentist from Seoul who opens a small clinic in a small town, while Kim plays an all-purpose "handyman", who takes any job and solves any problem for the price of 50,000 won a day.

"In the film, my character seems special because he's able to do so many things, but in fact he's not that special", Kim said at a press conference in Seoul Tuesday. "He's just trying to help out the people of the town, because they helped him out when he was younger".

Four Korean films selected for Fantasporto

Four Korean films have been selected to screen at the Oporto International Fantastic Film Festival in Portugal, more commonly known as Fantasporto. The festival's 28th edition will feature PARK Ki-hyeong's "Acacia", KIM Ji-woon's A Tale of Two Sisters, and LEE Jong-hyeok's "H" in its main competition section, as well as BAEK Woon-hak's "Tube" in a special competitive section for new directors.

Fantasporto is one of the world's most widely-known "fantastic" film festivals, devoted to genre cinema in general and horror/sci-fi in particular. This year's edition will be held from February 20-28.

In past years the festival has bestowed several awards on Korean cinema, including a Special Jury Prize for KIM Ki-duk's "The Isle" in 2000, a Best Actress award for Seo Jeong (The Isle), as well as a Best Director (YOON Jong-chan), Special Jury Prize and Best Actress (JANG Jin-yeong) award for "Sorum" in 2001. Korean films back in the black in 2003

Korean films were back in the black in 2003, just a year after they were awash in red ink, according to statistics compiled by the production company IM Pictures. Korean films combined for profits of 1.4 billion won this year, a tiny sum that still marks a notable turnaround from last year when they left losses of 30.8 billion won.

Last year saw a rude crushing of investor illusions in the film industry as big-budget blockbusters like "Yesterday", "R U Ready?" and "Resurrection of the Little Match Girl" flopped one after the other at the box office.

Financial managers who had been drawn to the film industry by rumors of a lucrative boom pulled out en masse, fueling fears of a "Chungmuro IMF" that would hurt the rapid growth of Korean cinema.
