MK Pictures to launch distribution arm

MK Pictures, one of Korea's leading production companies that was formed from the merger of KangJeGyu Films, Myung Film and manufacturing company Buffalo Seshin in 2004, has announced that it will open a distribution arm.

Beginning with romantic comedy When Romance Meets Destiny on November 23, the company plans to release a total of 10 films in 2006 and 12 in 2007, including both Korean and imported titles. The company is in the process of securing a $23m film investment fund that will be used to produce up to six titles of its own per year, and it will also distribute titles from other companies.

MK Pictures also operates an international sales arm which is active in promoting and selling Korean films to foreign territories.

To date this year, MK Pictures has produced the films Wet Dreams 2, The President's Last Bang, and Little Brother, and upcoming titles include When Romance Meets Destiny, comedy Bewitching Attraction, and action noir Bloody Tie. ...| More

Talent overcomes looks for 'ordinary' Park Seul-gi

February 16, 2005 ㅡ "I'm not insecure about the way I look anymore. I learned that there are many ways other than just being pretty to reach your dream", said Park Seul-gi, 18, who recently became a "star" following failure after failure because of her "ordinary" appearance.
Ms. Park's oddyssey began in her first year of middle school in Gangwon province when she took a bus to Seoul during each vacation. In one hand, she had money that she had saved over the entire semester and in the other the address of a celebrity management company. Her dream was to become a famous singer ― she was already known as a great singer in her hometown.

'Wet Dreams 2' delivers false teenage fantasy

It is an unwritten rule that sequels rarely outperform their originals in the movie industry. Higher expectations - and a slightly skeptical attitude - may explain why sequels are often synonymous with flops (I've seen it all in the original, so what else can you do with this sequel?).
"Wet Dreams 2", which opens today nationwide, falls into the sorry category. But before brushing it aside quickly, it is worth pondering what this supposedly "provocative sex comedy" is about and what issues, if any, it puts forward.

Directed by Jeong Cho-sin, the film revolves around sexual fantasy and episodes played out by 17-year-old high school girls. The background is set in 1991, Chung said in a post-premier news conference, suggesting that girls might sport a whiff of innocence.

Our "innocent" heroine Oh Sung-eun (Kang Eun-bi) and her close friends Bang Sue-yeon (Jeon Hye-bin) and Kim Mi-sook (Park Seul-gi) are hanging around together, dreaming about their Prince Charmings.

Film Sequels to Hit Local Theaters

It is commonly said that film sequels are rarely better than the original, which has been true for all the local sequels in recently years except for such movies as "Hi Dharma 2: Showdown in Seoul (Talmaya Seoul-kaja)", a sequel for gangster comedy "Hi, Dharma (Talmaya Nolja)" in 2002.

But it seems that local movie companies don't quite believe it or want to challenge it, given that many of upcoming movies are sequels to popular films of recent years.

"Wet Dreams 2 (Mongjonggi 2)"

The starter in the lineup is "Wet Dreams 2", part of trilogy of teen sex comedy. It will first meet local audience on Jan. 13.

The first installment was set in a boy's middle school in 1987 and told funny and frank stories related to teenagers' sexual desires while the upcoming sequel is set in a girl's high school in 1991 with similar topics.

Rating Board Deems Teen Film Too Adult

The rating board for local films is finding the content and posters for recent movies about teenagers in sexual or adult situations to be too adult for younger viewers.

The upcoming film "Jenny, Juno" tells of a couple in middle school who give a birth to a baby. Given the taboo nature of its subject, it seemed natural that it got a rating of 18 and over.

However, other recent films about teenagers dealing with the adult situation of marriage, such as "Orin Sinbu (My Little Bride)" and "Yogosaeng Sijibbonaegi (Marrying School Girl)", were given the rating of 12 and over and 15 and over, respectively.

Showeast, the production company of "Jenny, Juno", said that they avoided showing overtly sexual scenes and tried to honestly depict the issues and problems faced by teenagers in real life. The company has requested that the Korea Media Rating Board (KMRB) reconsider its rating of the film.
