In the last few years, Korean films, TV dramas and pop music have become immensely popular abroad, a phenomenon known as the Korean Wave. This is the 33rd in a series of essays by a select group of scholars and journalists looking at the spread of Korean pop culture in Southeast Asian countries and beyond. - Ed.

Following is an email interview with Tom Larsen, president of YA Entertainment, the largest distributor of Korean TV drama DVDs in the United States. - Ed.

The Korea Herald: What is the current market position of Korean TV dramas in the U.S. market? How are they perceived in comparison with mainstream U.S., Chinese and Japanese programming?

Tom Larsen: Like most other TV programming from international markets, Korean TV dramas are generally considered a specialty entertainment niche here in the United States. Having said that, the popularity of Korean TV dramas in the United States has grown dramatically over the past five years. Korean TV dramas are now widely recogni...| More

Another comic artist eyed by the film circle following Heo Yeong-man is online cartoonist Kang Do-young (aka Kang Pool, 33). The copyright to his feature comics sold instantly. "A.P.T" was made into a film in 2006 and "Fool", released after a delay, has also attracted many moviegoers.

First generation Internet comic artist

Regarded the first generation Internet comic artist, Kang's debut came after a long struggle and owes its success to the Internet. He didn't formally learn comic writing in college and nor was he taught by a famed artist. The start of it all was when he started to paint comic wall posters while serving the student body at Sangji University. As written posters didn't catch students' attention, he began to turn them into comics.

Committed to the task for 7 years, he decided to become a comic artist just ahead of graduation. In college, he often wore green clothes, thus he earned his nickname Kang Full (green is considered a "full" color in Korea), which he re...| More

Actress and singer Bae Seul-ki is making headlines with her new album entitled 'Flying'.

Bang Si-hyuk, the music producer for superstar "Rain", and Yoon Jong-shin, a singer and songwriter who wrote the song 'On the Street' for Sung Si-kyung, have come together to take in Bae's album-making process. Other renowned musicians such as Cho Kyu-chan, Nam Ki-sang and Huh Jae-hyuk have also written songs for Bae's second studio album.

The title song of the album, 'Seulki Say', which was composed by Bang, features a strong hip hop beat. Bae is currently working hard on the choreography of this song.

The young artist said her second album will be more mature compared to her debut album which emphasized her cute "girl-like" personality. She also said her fans can expect something a lot more "new" from her latest album.

Fans can check out Bae on the October 14th edition of Music Bank on KBS 2TV....| More

By Lee Hyo-won
Staff Reporter

While the female persona Korean entertainment remains largely reminiscent of Hollywood during the 1950~60s, a few in recently released or upcoming films are beginning to reflect, with some realism, Korean women today.

Women onscreen tend to be either innocent asexual Audrey Hepburns (think Lee Young-ae, Choi Ji-woo, Song Hye-kyo) or smoldering Marylin Monroes oozing with sex appeal (Kim Hye-soo, Uhm Jung-hwa). Then there exists a third, very minor group of eccentrics like Katherine Hepburn that fit into neither category, like actresses Kang Hye-jeong, Bae Doona and Kong Hyo-jin.

In other words, it is rather difficult to meet truly realistic female characters in movies. A most disappointing example is director Kwak Gyeong-taek's latest offering "A Love". In this terribly old-fashioned story about a modern-day Romeo and Juliet, the heroine is but a mere caricature embodying romantic fantasies: the unforgettable first love, frail damsel in distress ...| More

...ING: Too many would have beens by Rogue

F
rom the onset, the viewers are given a taste of how close the mother and daughter are, and this is an important foundation of the movie because of a twist towards the end.

Lim SooJeong plays Kang MinAh, a reclusive young lady who knows she's sick but doesn't know EXACTLY how sick because that fact is hidden by her mom, whose only wish is to have MinAh's remaining years lived in happiness. Enter Lee YoungJae, played by Kim RaeWon, a photography student. He befriends MinAh, who is reluctant at first but gives in when YoungJae proves to be relentless in his pursuit of friendship.

And the story progresses with YoungJae and MinAh dating. I didn't see any solid scenes where I can conclude that the two are falling in love, except maybe that hospital scene when YoungJae placed a ring on MinAh's deformed hand - and that signalled YoungJae being IN love already. And even that was weak because there weren't previous scenes to back it up. Sure, MinAh was probably attracted to youngJae, her lines say as much; and YoungJae was being extraordinarily sweet and nice, but by the time MinAh succumbs to her illness, you're left hanging.

Now on to that twist. The twist kind of muddles the plot abit, and I found myself replaying scenes in my head as to when the mom and YoungJae could have possibly met. I was left to speculate. And I also found myself justifying to myself that maybe the reason why the scenes between Youngjae and MinAh aren't that solid to establish a romantic set-up is because there would be a twist in the end. I got more confused rather than being enlightened though.

I think it would have been better if they showed YoungJae meeting the mom earlier in the movie. The twist would no longer be a surprise as discerning viewers would arelady know what will happen but what the heck, it would have been a million times better and more poignant. Think 10 Things I Hate About you and ...ING's plot would have been illuminating.
