YesAsia Editorial Description

Marc Kim (a.k.a. Kim Hyeon Seong) grabbed the attention of the international film audience in 2003 with his directorial debut feature, Mr. Butterfly, which screened in the Critics Week section at the 60th Venice Film Festival. The writer/director assembled an A-list cast with Kim Jung Eun ( Marrying the Mafia, Lovers in Paris) and Kim Min Jong ( Windmill Palm Grove, Guardian Angel) in the leading roles. Kim Jung Eun took on a weighty role as a disheartened woman in a bold attempt to shed her comedic, girl-next-door image. It was a risky choice for the actress given the phenomenal success of her previous comedy Marrying the Mafia which attracted over five million moviegoers nationwide. Kim Min Jong, who reached fame and popularity through his TV drama appearances, stars as the male protagonist.

Set in the 1980s during the military dictatorship of Chun Doo Hwan, Mr. Butterfly portrays a gloomy picture of two young people struggling to find each other in the midst of the country's democratic movement. Min Jae (Kim Min Jong) promises Hae Mi (Kim Jung Eun) that he will return within a year. Hae Mi looks on with tears rolling down her face as his train destined for Seoul pulls away. Their matching butterfly tattoos serve as a constant reminder for his return, but five years roll by with no sign of Min Jae. One day, fate reunites Min Jae, now a nightclub gigolo, with Hae Mi, now the kept woman of a high-ranking military officer. Tragedy befalls the two lovers when suspicious soldiers drag Min Jae off, leaving Hae Mi tormented and helpless.

excellent Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I find that the story is very nice. Kim Jung Eun is extremely pretty and sexy in this movie. She has the best feature as compare to other korean actress. Her acting in this movie is different from her other movies, she very lady and classic, whereby most of her other movies are more to cute side. I like both of her classic and cute act, she can carry very well for both of them. Wow she looks really very pretty and gorgeous in this film. Please enrol her for more movies and drama as she has fanastic acting. I will like to see her more.

Very good film Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Execellent actors, music and cinematography. The pacing is quite good and you wont feel bored even you dont know that part of Korea history where the country is under military dictatorship. The director tells the sad love story in a calm fashion like a cup of lukewarm water instead of stirring up your emotion. Action, passion, greed, power struggle, jealousy, torture... all are just made and finely balanced.

Nabi was selected as one (among seven from around the world) of the selected features films in the International Critics' Week section of the 60th Venice International Film Festival. Below is an abstract on Nabi (Mr. Butterfly) provided by the official site of the 60th Venice International Film Festival:

Far-East cinema has always been evocative, choreographic and melodramatically sanguinary, in which Sirk cinema style is merged with a poetic vision of action. Mr Butterfly, is a perfect example of this tradition with clear references to John Woo, reintroducing the formula according to South Korean culture. This film institutes a perfect and dynamic harmony between the different Seoul cinema typologies: exasperated romanticism, the mythical transfiguration of the underworld, psychological introspection, martial art cinema and the use of symbolic and plastic violence. Following a dreamy and yearning opening the film suddenly changes scene utilizing the codes of jail cinema. The love story leaves room for bullets, physical torment and blood, in which the good guys and the bad guys, the lost lovers, the courageous and cowardly participate in and derive from the same, contradictory and articulated humanity.
