Taiwanese actress Shu Qi leads the cast of the highly anticipated action comedy My Wife is a Gangster 3. Released in 2001, the first My Wife is a Gangster, starring Shin Eun Kyung as a tough female gang leader, was a big hit in Korea, selling over five million tickets. Shin reprised her role for the sequel, My Wife is a Gangster 2, but the film failed to take off at the box office despite a high-profile cameo appearance by Zhang Ziyi. The series was originally meant to continue with Shin and Zhang facing off in a third film, but both actresses eventually opted out, paving the way for a franchise facelift and a much needed narrative kick.

My Wife is a Gangster 3 now features a completely new story with a completely new cast. Shu Qi steps into the lead role opposite the always interesting Lee Bum Soo (The City of Violence) and a solid supporting cast, including Oh Ji Ho (Super Rookie), Shaw Brothers actor Ti Lung, Hong Kong action film regular Ken Lo, and actress Hyun Young (The Legend of Seven Cutter) who provides much of the film's laughs. Director Cho Jin Kyo, who also helmed the first installment of the series, approaches the story and his international cast with a refreshing new formula this time around, modeling My Wife is a Gangster 3 into a Roman Holiday action comedy.

Chinese-Korean Lim Aryong (Shu Qi) gets sent to South Korea to lay low by her triad leader father (Ti Lung) who is engaged in a bloody power struggle in Hong Kong. In Korea, Aryong meets kindhearted gangster Ki Chul (Lee Bum Soo) who, unaware of her identity, tries to protect her from the legions of thugs hunting her down. Little does he realize, Aryong is more than capable of defending herself.

Professional Review of "My Wife Is a Gangster 3 (DTS) (Limited Edition) (Korea Version)"

My Wife is a Gangster 3 sees director Cho Jin Kyo returning to the popular Korean series, with Taiwanese actress Shu Qi taking over lead duties from original star Shin Eun Kyung, sparing viewers another non-performance from starlet Zhang Ziyi, who had previously been earmarked for the role. Although some might bemoan the absence of Shin, it's easy enough to see why it was felt that this second sequel needed an injection of fresh blood, with the concept pretty much having run its course with the notably less successful second film. Wisely eschewing any connection to its predecessors, the film attempts to breathe new life into the franchise, offering up a new protagonist though without straying far from the same basic formula.

The film follows Aryong (Shu Qi), the Chinese-Korean daughter of a Hong Kong gang boss (played by veteran Shaw Brothers and Better Tomorrow star Ti Lung) who is forced to flee to Korea for her own safety after making a major faux pas by stabbing o... [Read more]

    Brilliant Comedy Capers!Customer Review Rated 9 out of 10Tuesday, May 08, 2007
Reviewer: numinair  Top 30 Reviewer More than 100 reviews available (See all this customer reviews)

If any are wondering if this third outing of the MWIAG series is in any way going to meet up to the original, cast out all fears as this film is a sure fire hit! Shu Qi integrates nicely as the sharp and well performed Chinese lady gangster, fits into the role perfectly and her character's style is pretty well an extension of Eun-kyung Shin's portrayal in the preceding two films. What makes this a sure fire hit, though, are the excellent talents of Bum Soo Lee and Hyun Young as two of the most funniest characters yet in the series and as part of a quartet of very colorful and funny gangster characters. Bum Soo performs here as a goofy "lovable rouge" gang boss assigned to protect Shu Qi's character (hopelessly to heroic) from a turf war in her home land and the brilliant Hyun Young (who is also recently in "The Perfect Couple") plays out pitch prefect comedy as Bum Soos gang's Chinese/Korean translator and along with the two very funny stooges under Bum Soo's wing, make it one of the most funniest comedy groupings I have seen for a while in a Korean movie. Hyun's toying of Bum Soo's two gang members throughout the movie, by interpreting Shu Qi's Chinese into Korean a 'little bit different than she is speaking' so to get the upper hand, is memorable cinema. Hyun Young is fabulous in this film, so funny and her presence in this movie is sure to produce the high taking point.

The film also runs along at a nicely paced tempo with the 4 buffoonery gang characters performing all the comedy alongside the 'straight gal' action aspects of Shu Qi's fighting character - and as a complete combo are a very well cast and brilliant mix. The 'wife' aspect also fits into this film and isn't a throwaway title as it could have ben, although to say more about that would spoil the plot. The script is very funny too (you guessed), witty, sharp and full of future anecdotes. Check out the naughty car chase with Shi Qi and Bum Soo mid way through! Action wise there is most likely as much as there was in the previous two films and the fighting scenes are choreographed very well with a showdown at one point between Shu Qi and another Chinese female gang assassin that could be a nod towards what could have been the duel between Eun-kyung Shin and Ziyi Zhang if that original concept had happened. But this film is far more recommended for its comedy than a martial arts action flick in the main. The original film may still hold as the best one, due to it being a unique styled film, but no doubt that this third outing is lots of fun and worth every minute of your time - don't miss this one!

    - This customer review refers to My Wife Is A Gangster 3 (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)

"My Wife is a Gangster 3" is about as uneven as a movie can get. There are some hilarious scenes, primarily featuring Hyun Young as an interpreter who starts out timid and scared and ends up shamelessly exploiting her position. And there are some entertaining action scenes, mostly involving Shu Qi as a lean, mean fighting machine. In between those high points are intermittent low points, including some atrociously low-brow stabs at humor and a romance between Shu Qi and Lee Bum Soo that is never believable.

The story is about hit woman Shu Qi being sent into hiding in Korea to dodge the retaliation for one of her killings in Hong Kong. Some low level thugs in a Korean gang are charged with looking after her. The thugs have no idea who she is and try to impress her with their purported toughness. She ends up repeatedly rescuing them when they bumble their way into confrontations they can't handle. Eventually, the bad guys in HK learn of Shu Qi's whereabouts and send a hit woman after her. Violence ensues, followed by a silly romantic ending.

"My Wife is a Gangster 3" is an amusing way to spend an evening, although the film could and should have been tightened up. While this movie doesn't hold a candle to the original "My Wife is a Gangster" film, I can recommend it as a pleasant diversion.

    - This customer review refers to My Wife Is A Gangster 3 (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)

I have seen the previous My wife is a Gangster 1 & 2 but this 3 is the BEST and real funny!!!! I find Lee Beom(Bum)Soo attractive and funny & he acts his role very well as in his previous movies though. He is so credible. And of course Oh Ji Ho he is just adorable but is only given quite a small role in this film, so with his other sidekick don't know his Korean name & so with the translator she is good too!!!. Shu Qi is sexy and acts well too. and she could really give a mean high kick huh. I think I have seen this movie 4 times now, you want to keep on viewing it because you want to laugh :----)and I really enjoy watching this movie.

    hilarious, great!!Customer Review Rated Excellent - 10 out of 10Thursday, July 26, 2007

10/10 hands down!! After watching so many tearjerker and lagging kmovies/dramas, this movie is sooooo good! The movie is hilarious b/c of the language barrier btwn shu qi and the main actor, lots of humor in the translating. The scenes where shu qi fights is also exciting, b/c we get to see a woman beat up all the men, and all of them bow down to her. It's really a great movie with a good story about how shu qi has to go to korea to be safe, and there she meets her future husband. Although i think they could've found a better main actor, the movie was great!!
