YesAsia Editorial Description

It's cop against crook in Nowhere to Hide, the sensational 1999 film from Lee Myung Sae, who went on to direct 2005's Duelist. When a drug dealer ends up dead, it's up to two tough-as-nails police detectives to track down the vicious killer and bring him to justice. However, Detectives Woo (Park Jung Hoon, from Heaven's Soldiers and Two Guys) and Kim (Jang Dong Gun, from Taegukgi and The Promise) aren't your average policemen; in fact, they're far from it. Known for their unconventional, often brutal police tactics, these two detectives aren't afraid to use plenty of excessive force when dealing with lowlife hoodlums - a trait which makes the duo a constant target for scrutiny by their superiors.

Things heat up, however, when the detectives get some inside information on the murderer, a clue which leads them to the killer's girlfriend (Choi Ji Woo, from Everybody Has Secrets and Winter Sonata). This move puts them on a collision course with the murderer, a man who's not only even more vicious than they are, but is perhaps the most evil man they've crossed paths with during their entire career in law enforcement. The killer in question is Chang Sung Min (Ahn Sung Ki, from Musa: The Warrior and Arahan), a brilliant, dastardly, yet altogether refined sociopath who makes things decidedly personal with the detectives. Who will live and who will die? Don't miss the dramatic rain-drenched finale that inspired the climactic battle in The Matrix Revolutions! Full of breathtaking images, stylish camerawork, and an undeniable visceral punch, Nowhere to Hide is a cat and mouse thriller like no other! It's no wonder that the film emerged as the winner of the Blue Dragon Award for Best Film in 1999!

Professional Review of "Nowhere To Hide Special Edition"

February 20, 2006

This professional review refers to Nowhere To Hide (Hong Kong Version)
The critical responses of Nowhere to Hide are quite extreme. Some people love it very much while some totally hate it. Personally, I am sure this film is not in my top 10 list, nevertheless, it is still one of the most important films produced in Korea in the last few years.

The plot of the film is strikingly plain and straightforward. Don't expect any witty run and escape scenes as you have seen in the Hong Kong films Running Out Of Time or The Longest Nite, nor any heroic duel like in A Hero Never Dies, it is not like that at all. The story is a cliche. A drug boss is killed by Chang Sung-min (Ahn Sung-Gi). Detective Woo (Park Joong-Hoon) is assigned to investigate the case. Together with his partner (Jang Dong-Gun), they pursue the cunning Sung-min in a maze-like chase. The whole film is about the chase itself. At last, Woo and Sung-min have a final encounter in a coal mining town...

I belive the cliche of the story is done on purpose. Director Lee Myung-Se wants to use the cliche to break the cliche. The more the plot appears banal, the more you can notice the deviation. It is a film that requires you to see it more than once. It is only through multiple viewings that you can get the most. The primary deviation is that the detective is not a gentleman wearing a nice suit. Park Joong-Hoon breaks the typical image of a detective in this genre. He does not wear suits, he is rude to girls, he fights with a bat instead of a pistol. He looks more like a gangster than a cop (One interesting comparison I found out is that Park's character resembles Takeshi Kitano in Violent Cop a lot. Both of them prefer violence as the only resort and their behaviors are unanimously spooky). Another deviation is the ending, the fight between Park Joong Hoon and Ahn Sung-Gi. When I saw it the first time, I was a little startled by the result of their duel. Other scenes like the murder at the beginning are also totally refreshing and eye opening. The use of Bee Gees's Holiday as the background music is organic. It results in a striking conflict - a funky collision of peace (music) and violence (image).

In terms of the technical aspect of the film, the cinematography and the editing are quite stylistic. The filmmakers employ lots of slow and fast motions to capture the action of the characters. Heavy metal music and innovative editing techniques (jump cuts, dissolve...) are also seen in the chasing scenes. Whether it is successful or not is a very subjective question. If you are open minded and are a fan of experimental film, I am sure you will enjoy this film very much.

The only part that baffles me is the ending. After the case is closed, the ending scene features Park Joong Hoon waiting for Choi Ji Woo in a car. I don't really understand what the director wants to convey through this scene, since throughout the film, I don't think there is any romantic tie between the two.

In conclusion, this is a highly energetic and vigorous film. I respect the guts of the director. He is willing to push the infinite possibilities of cinema to the extreme.

VCD (HK version) - The image and sound qualities are pretty good. Other than that, I really don't have much to say about the VCD.

Cool guy(s) - Park Joong-Hoon

Beauty does not need a "plot" Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
To people who say it is boring and has no plot: this is a masterpiece of cinematographic (i.e. primarily audio-visual) art, not a sermon. What plot can be behind raindrops? Or the story of human courage, determination, spiritual strength and affection is not a "plot" enough? Whatever, this movie is definitely not for the Santa-Barbara-kind-of-plot fans. But if you want to see a Movie - this is it.

NOT A JOHN WOO STYLE Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I bought this S.E version.there is a sentence in face of box :'is Hollywood ready to new John Woo ?' Let me give an answer:No.Because There is No Lots Of Action,No Enough Brotherhood Of Men,No Much A Stylistic Action Choreography,No Peak,No Chow Yun Fat
There is a tough police guy who goes the back of criminal and uses overbearing methods.
SO THIS MOVIE IS SIMILAR 'PUBLIC ENEMY' if you watched PUBLIC ENEMY i suggest you not buying this movie.
BUT ONLY I THINK WITHOUT MAKING ANY COMPARISON WHAT THIS FILM IS,I CAN SAY:GOOD FIGHT CHOREOGRAPHY and HAVE DIFFERENT STYLE SO IT MAKES ITSELF BE WATCHABLE
This DVD S.E of Nowhere To Hide film consists of 2 DVD :Korean version and International version.Korean Version :Language Korean,Subtitle English and Korean.Trailers,Chats with Actors,NG Cuts,Making Of...
