Professional Review of "R- Point DTS Limited Edition"

    August 22, 2005

This professional review refers to R-Point DTS
Leave your preconceptions at the door: R-Point is no ordinary ghost film. Nor is it an ordinary war film. Instead of assaulting viewers with creaky long-haired girl ghosts or green-clad grunts firing at anything that moves, Kong Su Chang gives us a thoughtful, eerie, and moving indictment of Korean involvement in other people's wars.

This is a film that recreates the atmosphere of ghost stories told around a campfire: that sense of being out of place, and hearing things that might well be true, sets up a dissonance in the mind between our usual place in the world and the margins we've strayed into. It's worth making the distinction quite explicit: this is a ghost film, but not a horror film. There's no spine-chilling terror, no gore-drenched slaughter, simply the increasingly profound sense that something is very wrong.

The filmmaker is adept at creating this sense of unease, using many different techniques. Unlike other filmmakers I could mention, he doesn't resort to the demonization of the Vietnamese to do it. Here, the Vietnamese are almost invisible, an unseen presence in their own land. The Korean platoon, sent on a search and rescue mission, are acutely aware of being out of place, quintessential strangers in a strange land. The country itself seems to reject them, from the mosquitoes that bedevil them to the tropical heat, unfamiliar and uncomfortable to men from a cold climate. The ground leads them astray constantly, offering mementos of tragedies long past but not forgotten.

The unease grows, but never changes into the sort of dread that characterizes most ghost films. We become more uneasy with the soldiers, and sink with them into their despondency, but we are denied the easy shocks employed by many horror directors to spice up a flat film. When dead colleagues appear momentarily, neither the audience nor the soldiers are sure whether they are ghosts or simply the product of overwrought, overtired minds desperate to explain the sense of unease.

The intent here was apparently not so much to make a ghost film as a film about war. Other people's wars, to be specific. The director has doubts about the wisdom of Korea's involvement in American wars abroad, and uses the medium of the ghost film to bring some of those doubts to light. Very effectively, too: there can be few jobs more conducive to worrying about death and after death than soldiers, who meet death in a very personal way on a daily basis. Their desire to see dead colleagues once again, part of the nostalgia of the profession, changes to queasy terror when the dead colleagues manifest themselves. We want things back as they were, not to have our faces rubbed in things as they are: we want our dead friends returned alive, not drifting in from the other world.

Subtle and understated, this film is exceptionally well-crafted. From the "Making Of" on the extras disc, it's clear that more extensive effects and scenes were planned, but pruned from the final film, which is all for the better. More extensive use of overtly ghostly manifestations, or ghastly deaths, would have reduced the impact of this strong psychological thriller. This one deserves the accolades that have been heaped upon it.

Its a different action movie Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Well, this is quite different from the other action movies ive seen. This has also a touch of horror. A story of a battlion lost in Vietnam. Gam Woo Sung team came to R Point to look for the people that were lost, unfortunately, Rpoint is haunted and when you entered the place, you cannot go back.

This is quite a break through to those who wants thrilelr films. It's good movie.

The concept for this film is actually very good, but, the movie turns out to be less than good. In my opinion it was let down by poor Direction (but not totally), editing style and the music score (which became very basic and didn't create much atmosphere).
This film could of been very creepy. The actors were great, the locations and like I said, the concept was good too. Movies like Deathwatch do more to create a better atmosphere in a war film.

This is a really good horror film, with a compleatly new angle. About a small group of soldiers sent on a mission to find some lost men. Things arnt what they seem. The men start seeing things that cant be explained and soon find themselves in trouble. I loved this film, original, scary, and very well made. The actors were also brilliant. I wish more films like this could be made.
You wont be dissapointed. Get it

The forbidden R-point... Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
I have to say I liked this film in many different point of views. A horror story line base on a Vietnam War zone in Vietnam. I must say the idea of this film project was absolutely brilliant and fresh. I thought the plot was quite interesting never have I felt there was a dead-air period during the film. Army v.s. unknown spirits.... Can you picture that? Once you can you will understand the fear within the forbidden area of the R-point. A good K-horror film~

Pretty good... but not all that Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
On the whole, this movie is quite good and does give you the chingles here and there, but I have to admit it goes a bit spastic now and then. I didn't really get some bits toward the end, and was left with my mouth open and shrieking 'WHAT?!'. The directing is good, but for some reason the movie isn't that great. Storyline, perhaps? Oh wells, if you're bored and need a movie to watch, this movie isn't so bad...
