Pleasing instrumental sounds are interwoven with the emotional true story of a trumpet player whose life is given new meaning after he takes up the responsibility as teacher of a provincial middle school orchestra.
The fact that no opening is available for a professional trumpet player leads Hyon-woo's (Choi Min-sik) life into an eventual dead end. As if that was not bad enough, he is getting nowhere in his attempts to re-establish the relationship he once shared with his ex-girlfriend. Driven by despair he finally leaves Seoul to build up his life anew as teacher of a small town middle school brass band. Discovering hope and inspiration within his new job and surroundings, Hyon-woo's life is suddenly filled with new purpose through his encounter with adorable pharmacist Soo-yon (Jang Shin-young) and one of his unique students.
When Spring Comes was the top movie title in autumn 2004 based on research carried out by Korea's cinemas. According to the same source, the film's lead actor Choi Min-sik was selected as most promising actor. The established Korean artist has risen to super stardom ever since his outstanding performance in the internationally acclaimed movie hit Old Boy that was honored with the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Choi also appeared in such blockbuster films as the action-romance Shiri and Chihwaseon, which centered on the true life story of a famous artist. This time he teams up with Ryu Jang-ha who makes his debut as director.
When Spring Comes received the trophy for Best Music at the 25th Blue Dragon Awards presentation.

| Choi Min Sik has been nominated to the Best Actor Award of the 25th Blue Dragon Award this year. Although he did not get the award, his performance is really good and completely different from Dae su in Old Boy. This is a heart-warming movie and the interacting between the schoolboys and their teacher plus the warm smile of the school teacher (by Choi Min Sik) give you the feeling of flowers blossom in Spring time after a cold cold Winter and everything (good) starts to grow. Also Choi Min Sik practised trunpet just to perfect his performance and it seems to me that he is a professional in this movie!! This movie the Best Musical Award of the 25th Blue Dragon Award last night (29 November 2004). |
