VCR1 This Week's Cultural News

These are the images that usually come to mind when one thinks of Oriental paintings.

However, in this exhibition, people will be able to see unconventional images Girls' Generation and Lady Gaga in the works.

[Interview : Kim Yeong-hwi, Visitor] "I came because the exhibition looked interesting, but it was actually very fun".

[Interview : Kim Jong-jin, Visitor] "While the paintings give off a historical look and feel, they are filled with modern references. I think the paintings are fun to look at because both modern and traditional effects clash with each other".

Such pieces and more can be seen at Lee Sang-hyun's exhibition.

[Interview : Lee Sang-hyun, Artist] "My exhibition theme name is the name of a story from 'Geumo Shinhwa' by Kim Si-seup. It means that a drunk person is headed to Bubyeok Pavilion to play around there".

Lee Sang-hyun has created unique images based on historic events.

His artistic world is a unique mixture of the past, present and future. On top of that, visitors can see the artist himself in some form in every piece.

[Interview : Lee Sang-hyun, Artist] "Each piece has my own self in it, such as fishing or simply standing there. This was originally a photograph a French missionary took of a gisaeng in the 1920s, and I act as a witness in history here, as well as in other pieces".

Lee Sang-hyun's works also present his sense of humor. However, every piece of art he creates is possible only thanks to his unstopple efforts.

[Interview : Lee Sang-hyun, Artist] "These are characters that featured in one of my pieces. I made some military uniforms and took about 2,000 pictures of a model in that uniform making poses. The photos were cut out and placed according to my plans. It was very difficult and complicated, and if you're not patient enough, you can't do it".

A historic event took place in the summer of 1998, when the late Hyundai founder Chung Ju-yung [정주영] visited North Korea with cattle. Thanks to his visit, peace and reconciliation seemed possible.
Lee Sang-hyun created a video artwork to show his feelings from that time.

[Interview : Lee Sang-hyun, Artist] "The bleating of the cow is actually a call for one's mother. This is a burden that the late Hyundai founder Chung Ju-yung shares with millions of other displaced people from North Korea. The bleat is equivalent to all of the displaced people yelling 'Mother!' at North Korea".

Lee Sang-hyun's exhibition presents a different view of the present. It invites everyone to his unique world of imagination.

[STUDIO]

So not a lot of time left to enjoy this exhibition.
It runs until November 11th which is next Friday.
That's a one week notice everyone.
It looks like such a fun exhibition.
I think I would be laughing out loud in the gallery.
