1st Chungmuro Fest Announces Line-Up

Scheduled to launch October 25 to November 2, the first Chungmuro International Film Festival in Seoul (CHIFFS) will present a line-up of 150 titles from 32 countries. Located in the historical hub of the Korean film industry, the event will distinguish itself from a myriad of other film festivals by primarily featuring classic films.

With a robust budget of US$4.3 million, CHIFFS was planned as part of a revival project for the downtown Chungmuro area, and is chiefly sponsored by Seoul's Junggu district of which it is a part. The project includes renaming a 3-block section of Chungmuro "Director's Intention" to help restore the fame of the waning area.

CHIFFS will be headed by filmmaker and former Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival director Kim Hong-joon. Its inaugural program will feature retrospectives on Australian national cinema, the works of director John Boorman, Hong Kong director Patrick Tam, Charlie Chaplin, Asian Musicals, and Japanese shorts from the 20s and 30s.

The event will also showcase 15 classic Korean films, presenting a range of genres and directors highlighting the years 1957, '67, '77, and '87. Included are Han Hyeong-mo's "The Pure Love" (1957); Kim Soo-yong's "Children in the Firing Range" and "Flame in the Valley", and Shin Sang-ok's "Traces" (1967); Lee Won-se's "The World Without Mom", Song Yeong-su's "Butterfly Maiden", and Kim Ki-young's "Ieodo" (1977); and Lee Jang-ho's "A Wanderer Never Stops on the Road" and Im Kwon-taek's "Diary of King Yeon-san" (1987).
