A team led by Yoon Chang-ho at Seoul National University Hospital in Bundang studied the sleeping habits and body mass index of 2,156 adults. They found that the group who caught up on sleep over the weekend had a lower BMI than the group who did not.

One group got one hour and 42 minutes of extra sleep at weekends than the other group, and their BMI was 22.8 kg/㎡ compared to the latter's 23.1 kg/㎡.

The team said lack of sleep is a major cause of obesity besides poor eating habits and not enough exercise.

The findings were published in the latest edition of the journal Sleep.
