Lee Byeong-heon is the French Embassy in Seoul's first honorary ambassador to promote French culture.
The embassy on Thursday said the appointment marks the 120th year of bilateral ties with South Korea, citing Lee's degree in French literature from Hanyang University in Seoul.
In a ceremony at the Seoul Press Center, Lee said he will do best to promote events hosted by the embassy this year.
