"Alice in Wonderland" enters Korean box office at No. 1

Hollywood film "Alice in Wonderland" made a much anticipated successful bow in South Korea, winning the top spot on its box office for the first week of March, according to estimates on Monday.

The Korean Box Office System (KOBIS) revealed that the Walt Disney picture sold 557,566 tickets during the weekend of March 5 to 7, knocking out former four-week winner "Secret Reunion".

The fantasy adventure film by world renowned director Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway follows the story of Alice who returns to Wonderland for the second time.

"Reunion", a Korean action pic starring top actors Song Kang-ho and Gang Dong-won, slipped a spot to No. 2 with 248,829 admissions while newly released drama "Dear John" rounded off the top three with 92,704 moviegoers.

Rankings for Korean films "Parallel Life" and "Harmony" also dropped, each scoring 88,740 and 68,650 admits to place in fourth and fifth on the box office, respectively.

Other movies in the top 10 were "Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief", "Invictus", "The Fourth Kind", "Avatar" and "The Lovely Bones".
