[Reporter : ] Hello Conn-young

So what do you have for us today ?

[Reporter : ] Kangwon Land and was formed to revive the abandoned mine sites in Gangwondo. However, after the place became infamous for its gambling scenes, the site is making some changes. Kangwon Land and has changed its name to High One Resort and is looking to renew the place for families to visit#.

Thirteen years after its establishment, Kangwon Land changed its name in 2007 to High 1 Resort, in an attempt to give the area a more family-oriented atmosphere.

To reduce the resort's gambling image it's facilities can now be used year-round.

A water theme park will also be added to the resort with construction expected to be complete by 2015.

There will also be recreational facilities for families to enjoy.

Asia's biggest laser water show and the lake park attracts visitors as well.

[Interview : Jang Hyun-ah, Yoo Sung-mi, Shinyoung High School] "It's so pretty and I think it's so creative that the laser and fountains are mixed together. I want to come back with my family again".

The ultimate goal of High 1 Resort is to break out of its gambling image and create a new vacation venue for families and friends to visit together, like Las Vegas.

[Interview : Choi Hong-jip, CEO of Kangwon Land] "From a casino resort, we intend to make this place a perfect vacation spot for families all year round. We are going to make a variety of things available to make this place Asia's best multi-resort.

From abandoned land to a mecca for tourists, High 1 Resort is striving to make itself a high-end vacation hotspot.

You know, we would hear about Kangwon Land in newspapers and on the news, and it's mostly about gambling...so it's really hard for me to rethink of this place as a family-oriented resort.

[Reporter : ] It's hard for me as well. All we hear about in the news about not just Kangwon Land but for gambling sites in general is people getting caught gambling and hear stories of gambling addiction so it's hard to imagine a casino mecca like this place to be thought of a family oriented atmosphere. However, with all the efforts and ideas they put into this new concept, I think later on people will slowly forget the gambling part of Kangwon Land.

We'll have to wait and see for ourselves on how this place changes. And moving on, what else do you have for us

[Reporter : ] It was the coming of age day yesterday and you know, you have this day set for you to celebrate your moving onto adulthood, but there's really nothing special to do. So in a university in Chongju, 700 students donated blood in celebration of the coming of age day.

A lot of students are walking towards the central library during their free time.

The student body council organized a blood donation event in celebration of the coming of age day.

After the students go through some paper work and basic health check-ups, they are guided to the blood donation bus where they donate blood for 10 minutes.

[Interview : Kim Ji-soo, Freshman at Chongju University] "Instead of going out and drinking on the coming of age day, I wanted it to be more meaningful so I came here to donate blood".

700 people participated in this event.

Of this total, 70% were students celebrating the coming of age day having just turned 21.

All of the students who participated in this donation took pride in the fact that their blood could save lives.

[Interview : Yoo Ji-hoon, Freshman at Chongju University] "It's my second time donating blood and I'm glad that I can help other people and I hope there are more opportunities for me to donate blood in the future".

Many of the students not only donated blood but also donated their donation certificate.

[Interview : Jo Suk-ho, Senior at Chongju University] "We were looking to find events that were just about fun and entertainment, but more about giving to others. So that's when we thought of a blood drive".

This blood drive is making way for a new coming of age day culture.

This is definitely a new culture for the coming of age day because usually people tend to give presents to the new adults, such as roses and perfumes. I think this is a much better option and I'm very happy to hear that this event was thought up by the student body.

[Reporter : ] Definitely. I think this culture should spread not only during these special occasions, but on a regular basis. The Korean college culture has a very strong drinking environment, which during the coming of age day, would have been even more emphasized, but instead, these students decided to donate blood instead. I think this is a great way to celebrate this special occasion.

I think so as well. I hope to see more of these blood drives all around Korea. And moving on, now you have the events bulletin for us, right[Reporter : ] Yes I do, I brought you two concerts, one by the modern rock band 'Broccoli you too' and another by the contestant on the famous audition program Super Star K 2, Kim Jisoo.
