ArtPlus Network adds six more screens

KOFIC has announced an additional six theaters that will take part in the Art Plus Cinema Network, bringing the total number of screens in the nationwide chain to 18.

The theaters participating in ArtPlus agree to screen arthouse films for 146 days per year, in return for financial support from KOFIC. A special committee determines which films qualify as arthouse releases, based on various criteria. The network has been credited with giving additional opportunities to small independent and arthouse films to secure distribution throughout Korea.

KOFIC originally selected 12 screens to take part in the network for 2006/7 (see news article from April 14). However, given the high number of applicants to the program, additional funding has been secured to add an additional 6 screens.

The additional screens include CGV Gangbyeon, the Seoul Animation Cinema, Primus Dunsan, Primus Jeonju, SpongeHouse Cinecore and SpongeHouse Apgujeong.

In addition, KOFIC has announced that it will join with online reservation site Maxmovie to allow viewers to reserve tickets to ArtPlus venues online with no additional fees. A special site will be launched in co-operation with Maxmovie in May to encourage uptake of the service.
