"Avatar" tops Korean box office for fourth week

Hollywood blockbuster "Avatar" topped the local box office for the fourth consecutive week to become the most-watched foreign film in Korea over the weekend.

According to estimates released by Korea Box Office Information System (KOBIS) on Monday, "Avatar" attracted 835,345 viewers during the weekend of January 8-10 to gross over eight million viewers since its release on December 17. On Saturday, the James Cameron pic broke the record -- previously held by "Transformers 2" -- to set the record as the most-watched foreign film in Korea.

Korean comic action film "JEON WOO CHI : The Taoist Wizard", starring Gang Dong-won, remained in second place with 535,462 viewers during the weekend and grossing over 4.3 million viewers to date. Another Korean film "No Mercy", starring Sol Kyung-gu and Ryoo Seung-bum, debuted at No. 3 with 298,942 viewers.

Guy Ritchie's film adaptation of "Sherlock Holmes" followed in fourth place with 180,525 viewers while Hollywood animation "Alvin And The Chipmunks 2" rounded out the top five with 92,504 viewers.

Other movies included in the top ten were; "The Road", "Engine Sentai Go-onger VS Gekiranger", "Nine", "Pokemon: Arceus To The Conquering Of Space-Time" and "Astro Boy".
