In Between (Limited Edition) (Korea Version) DVD Region 3

Directed by Lee Chang Jae, In Between is a revealing and fascinating documentary that delves into the lives of Korea's modern-day shamans and an age-old culture that has existed for thousands of years. It is believed that shamans are chosen by spirits to act as a medium between the two worlds. Through their connection with gods and spirits, they are able to heal and communicate with the departed. Shamans, however, are apparently marked with mysterious, incurable illnesses, and carry this pain until they are ready to represent and receive the spirits.

The filmmakers spent a year following female shaman Lee Hae Gyong, documenting her daily life and shamanistic rituals. Amongst her encounters include a woman with leukemia, a little boy who sees ghosts, and a young woman struggling with the revelation that she is destined to be a shaman. In order to fulfill their roles, shamans must give up their own identities and live as outsiders. Despite their special status, their lives are tinged with tragedy for they are either here nor there, but In Between. No matter where one's beliefs may lie, inspiration and humanity can be drawn from this sensitive documentary.

대무(大巫) 이해경에게 평범한 스물 여덟 해를 살아온 '인희'라는 여자가 찾아온다. 요즘 들어 자꾸만 몸이 아프고, 집안에도 안 좋은 일들이 생긴다고 말하는 그녀. "맑고 순수한 영이 들었네... " 찬찬히 인희의 눈을 바라보다 차분하지만 떨리는 목소리로 이해경은 말한다. 누군가의 목소리가 들리고, 다른 사람의 앞날이 보이게 되면서 힘들어 하지만, 신이 자신을 찾아 왔다는 것을 거부하는 인희. 대무 이해경은 이러한 인희를 측은하게 여기고 옆에 두며 자신의 삶을 보여준다.

30년간 암을 비롯한 갖은 무병을 앓고 50살이 되어서야 신내림을 받게 되면서 고통에서 벗어난 손영희, 원인도 없이 왼쪽 눈을 실명하고 신이 보인다는 8살 동빈이, 교통사고로 죽음을 맞은 아들을 달래기 위한 굿을 하는 가족들을 만나게 되면서 인희는 차츰 마음을 열기 시작하고...

신의 그려 놓은 숙명을 따르도록 다른 이들을 이끄는 '소임'에 눈물 흘리는 대무 이해경. 그리고 가슴 속 묻어두었던 '신의 딸'로서의 숙명을 따르는 그녀의 뜨거운 눈물이 차오르는 이야기가 밝혀지는데...

신과 인간 사이에서 불가해한 소통을 업으로 삼는 무당의 존재를 통해 둘 사이의 미묘하고도 위태로운 선을 이어주는 무당의 삶을 감동적으로 포착한다. 스물여덟살 인희에게 어느 날 갑자기 찾아온 신내림의 운명과 그녀를 바라보며 거역할 수 없는 운명의 소임을 느끼는 무당 이해경의 삶이 안타깝게 드러난다.
