They became the second Korean act to win a Billboard award after Psy, who won the Top Streaming Song (Video) award in 2013 with his global smash "Gangnam Style". The award ceremony was held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Created in 2011, the Top Social Artist award is based on album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, touring and a global online vote by fans.

RM, the band's leader and rapper, said after receiving the trophy, "We still cannot believe we're standing here on this stage at the Billboard Music Awards… Most importantly, this award belongs to the people all around the world that shine their love and light on us by the millions and make BTS proud".

BTS also wrote on their Twitter account, "Our dream has come true".

BTS has reached the Billboard 200 chart four times. "The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2" reached No. 171 in December 2015, followed by "The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever" (No. 107, May 2016); "Wings" (No. 26, October 2016); and "You Never Walk Alone" (No. 61, February 2017).
