Culture Ministry Theater Highlights Indie Films

Some people like indie films because they want to see something unusual or offbeat.
Others watch them to catch up and coming directors.
Whatever their reason may be a theater in Seoul offers a spot for serious movie lovers to watch new films and meet the filmmakers.

While going to see a blockbuster is the norm for many people others prefer lesser-known movies.
Fortunately for them the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has a theater especially for indie film fanatics.
The ministry's central Seoul building houses the theater and every Friday showcases films from directors looking to make a name for themselves.

"MFM, standing for 'Mini Film Market' is a place for movie lovers to come together and enjoy independent films. The public requests particular movies to be shown, which filmmakers and distributors then bring to the theater".

This week's pick is "Who's Knocking At My Door?" by director Yang Hae-hoon, known for dark pieces, and said to be one of Korea's most promising young directors.
He wanted this film to praise the strength of those who live in a reality they did not choose.

"I wanted to deal with the people who faced irreparable situations and show what they lose while taking a step forward".

It's director Yang Hae-hoon's debut for a long film as he has made a handful of shorts that have won awards or made it to international film festivals like this year's Cannes.
Once the films are shown, the director and viewers hold a discussion critiquing the film and talking about the director's methods.
Organizers say 70 to 80 people apply every week to sit in the crowd of 36.

"The viewers' response is great and 'mfm' is mentioned on many online portals".

So if you're tired of the normal blockbusters you can head to mfm on a Friday, for an offbeat visual taste.
