YesAsia Editorial Description

Arguably one of the most talked about movies of 2007, D-War (a.k.a. Dragon Wars) is to date the fifth highest grossing Korean film of all time and the most expensive Korean movie ever made. Directed by Shim Hyung Rae as a follow-up to his 1999 sci-fi cult classic Reptilian (a.k.a. Yonggari), D-War is a riveting action fantasy of good triumphing over evil. Shim went with the Hollywood cast of British actress Amanda Brooks (Flightplan), veteran actor Robert Forster (Firewall), and Jason Behr (The Grudge), best known as Max Evans in the popular American television series Roswell. Seven years in the making, the sci-fi flick is Shim's own testimony of endurance and professional triumph. Jam-packed with swarming fire-spewing critters, gallant crusaders, and loads of slam-bang cat-and-mouse sequences, D-War thrusts its audience into a world of spectacular visuals generated by state-of-the-art, homegrown special effects that literally shocked the Korean film industry. With an enticing assortment of Hollywood-style action and Korean folklore, D-War crosses the cultural barriers, offering something for everyone.

L.A. is under attack. In the middle of investigating a series of unexplainable catastrophes, news reporter Ethan (Jason Behr) finds an unidentifiable giant scale at one of the disaster scenes. Taken aback initially, Ethan quickly recalls a Korean legend told to him by an antique dealer (Robert Foster). The old man predicted that Buraki, a ferocious giant serpent, would resurrect sometime during this lifetime to search for power source to morph into a dragon. Ethan, believed to embody the spirit of a resurrected warrior, must find the mystery woman who holds the key to the power source before Buraki does. His investigation guides him to Sarah (Amanda Brooks), a woman with a red dragon tattoo on her shoulder. Joining forces, Ethan and Sarah must battle against the army of giant reptilian beasts in an ultimate quest to end the prophecy once and for all.

This movie... Customer Review Rated Bad 0 - 0 out of 10
... sucked so badly! I had low expectations before watching the movie, but it was even worse than I could have imagined. The visual effects are OK, but the rest of the movie is an utter joke. This is in the top 3 worst movies I've watched this year.

Fun Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
shim sets out to create a humorous monster movie and by and large, succeeds despite hammy performances and a convulated script.

Brilliant Comic Gem! Customer Review Rated Bad 0 - 0 out of 10
My friends and I rented this from our local video store hoping for a humorous, fun movie at the very least, and boy oh boy were we satisfied! Shim Hyung Rae's comic talents shine through in this laugh-a-minute riot fest that.... huh? This is supposed to be a serious movie? You've got to be kidding me!

In all seriousness, this movie is a complete joke. Full of nothing but unintentional hilarity, it's a wonder why anyone would greenlight such a disastrous project. From an underdeveloped, and frankly stupid, story, boring characters, horrid dialogue, and perhaps the worst editing in recent memory, D-War is a terrible, terrible film. Shim's dedication may be admirable, but he shows nothing but complete incompetence as a movie director. Seven years in the making? Something tells me he (and the money he miraculously procured) could have been put to much better use elsewhere.
