Driving With My Wife's Lover (DVD) (Limited Edition) (Korea Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Combining road film, revenge drama, and black comedy elements, Driving with My Wife's Lover is the accomplished feature-length debut from Kim Tae Sik. Kim had previously served as assistant director on Park Chul Soo's Kazoku Cinema, in addition to years of television producing and directing shorts films like 32nd Dec.: Where is Mr. President?, and his experience is evident here. Smartly shot and precisely paced, the film subtly explores human nature, behavior, and emotions through frank dialogue, assured direction, and remarkable storytelling. Driving with My Wife's Lover also finds a perfect pitch in the pairing of character actors Park Kwang Jung and Jeong Bo Sik for the leading roles. The film premiered at the 11th Pusan Film Festival, and has since been invited to numerous festivals including Sundance, Rotterdam, and Berlin.

Tae Han (Park Kwang Jung) is a modest man who runs a small stamp shop in the seaside town of Nakasan. When he discovers that his wife is having an affair with a taxi driver, he sets out bitterly for revenge. Tae Han goes all the way to Seoul to hail the cab of his wife's lover Joong Sik (Jeong Bo Sik). On the long ride back, the two encounter various detouring situations that complicate the trip, but unexpectedly help them to forge an unlikely bond. As Tae Han learns more and more about Joong Sik through animated conversations and minor adventures, his anger and vengeful plan begin to slip away.

This edition comes with Pusan International Film Festival footage, theatrical trailer, and gallery.

Professional Review of "Driving With My Wife's Lover (DVD) (Limited Edition) (Korea Version)"

October 2, 2007

Kim Tae-han (Park Kwang-jung) believes his wife Eun-soo (Kim Sung-mi) is cheating on him. And he's not wrong either. The question is what is he going to do about it? A normally quiet man who works at carving printing seals in a little seaside town, Tae-han is so angry that he travels all the way to Seoul to directly confront his wife's lover. He hails a taxi to take him all the way back home to Naksan; the taxi driver it transpires is Park Jung-shik (Jeong Bo-seok), the man who is seeing his wife, and just so happens to be heading in that direction.

With two very different men stuck together in a confined space together over a long journey, it sounds like the set-up for a predictable road comedy, but if it doesn't quite work as a bitter comedy, Driving With My Wife's Lover at least manages to remain elusive and unpredictable. The journey back in the car only occupies the first half of the film and interestingly it plays out the quirky, bizarre angle rather than the flat-out broad comedy. The journey takes place on the hottest summer on record, so the unlikely travelling companions decide to avoid the crush of the motorways and take to the winding, mountainous country roads. The first half of the film then plays out a series of quirky adventures with - among other things - runaway watermelons, a breakdown (inevitably), an impromptu game of roadside badminton, and a swim in a mountain stream. Along the way it picks up the bizarre and strange sights of the Korean countryside and its seaside towns, presenting a refreshingly different view of the country than we are used to seeing in Korean movies.

There's a bitter edge underlying the on-the-road amusements however. Unaware of who he is driving, Jung-shik talks blithely about love, adultery and monogamy, while the increasingly perturbed and uptight Tae-han tries to measure himself up the taxi driver while playing the badminton game, and quite literally as they pee together into the wind at the side of the road. This darker tone takes over in the second half of the film as Tae-han, having drawn Jung-shik back to his hometown, decides to humiliate and castigate himself further by spying on the taxi-driver's affair with his wife. Having pushed himself over the edge, Tae-han then sets about taking revenge on a return journey.

With a curious mix of black humour and sex-comedy with a bitter undercurrent, Driving With My Wife's Lover lies somewhere between the films of Hong Sang-soo, with its vaguely elusive bipartite mirrored structure and its frank sex scenes, and Im Sang-soo's A Good Lawyer's Wife. Whether it is any more successful than the latter film at getting at the heart of relationships and Korean attitudes towards marriage and adultery is uncertain, as indeed is whether it is even attempting to do so. What it does manage to achieve is getting into the head of Kim Tae-han, and it's a very confused and strange place, prone to flights of fantasy driven by lust and anger. How much of what occurs is real or imaginary is never clear, but like much else in Kim Tai-Sik's debut film, it consequently remains intriguing and unpredictable right through to the end.

DVD
Driving With My Wife's Lover is released in Korea by CJ Entertainment. The film is presented on a dual-layer disc, is in NTSC format, and is encoded for Region 3.

Video
The video transfer is almost perfect. Transferred anamorphically at 1.85:1, the image is clear and sharp with good colours. The image is largely stable, although occasionally segments of the screen momentarily shift out of focus, usually before a scene transition. This would appear to be down to macro-compression artefacts and is scarcely a problem if it is even noticeable at all by most viewers. There is a slight level of grain and some blueness creeping into the blacks, but overall the image looks quite impressive, handling exteriors cleanly and interiors with a deep level of warm saturation.

Audio
The only audio track is the original Korean Dolby Digital 5.1 mix and it's perfectly clear throughout. Dialogue is audible, the soundtrack is well mixed and there is an adequate spread of sound for ambient effects. There is some low underlying whistling during the final epilogue scene, but since it is an isolated incident this would appear to be down to the original elements.

Subtitles
English subtitles are included, for the feature film only, and are excellent throughout, even translating incidental signs and notices. A couple of words have minor typos, dropping a letter, but grammatically the translation reads perfectly fine.

Extras
Extras are not extensive and without subtitles, the most potentially interesting one - a Q&A session at the Pusan International Film Festival (12:56) - isn't really of any use. Also included is a Photo Gallery (1:23) and the film's Theatrical Trailer (2:01).

Overall
It's hard to grasp what the purpose of Driving With My Wife's Lover is - is it a character study or does it have something wider to say about relationships and Korean society in general? Consequently, it's difficult to evaluate how successfully it achieves what it sets out to do, but the plot is quirky and unpredictable enough to keep the viewer interested, with strong characters who present a strong dynamic and good performances from all the main cast. CJ Entertainment's Region 3 release is a fairly typical Korean DVD edition, with a fine transfer, optional English subtitles and the standard unsubtitled extra features. by Noel Megahey - DVD Times

Anachronistic Passion Square Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
As I began watching this movie with its mischievous dry humored main theme and Tae Han (played excellently by Gwang Jeong Park) intricately cutting out a stamping seal, which he then suddenly inks and stamps vigorously an impression of an expletive word onto a paper form (which isn't darn or piffle), indicating disapproval of his wife's affair - I just knew I was in for a very dry humored treat from that 'word' go! This is brilliant, it really is and with this film's sharp wit and packed to the brim of visual funnies, I liked it similarly to the fallacious and wacky "A Bizarre Love Triangle", that also featured Eun Ji Jo here. I love Korean movies when they go for dry deadpan humor, and although relationship cheating isn't something I'm fan club member of, with all the great visual deadpan humor you get here, this is one extra marital affairs movie not to miss!

In this you follow the quirky and kooky Tae Han as he decides to hitch a lift home from Seoul with Joong Shik (Bo Seok Jeong), the taxi driver philander who is having an affair (and cheating on his own wife) with Tae Han's wife, but not letting Joong Shik realize he knows of his sordid affair with his wife. You then get a part road movie (first half of the film) with these two eccentric characters getting familiar with each other, and Tae Han constantly assessing Joong Shik's philandering ways, as JS drives and converses with various females on the route and speaks openly about his easy going attitudes to casual sex. (Also Indicating some car squeaking scenes to the sound of honeymooner's bed springs!) Tae Han and Joong Shik are like an 'odd couple' comedy act, playing into various oddball situations and eccentric whims. Like Joong Shik challenging Tae Han to a game of badminton (regarding their situation here, I nearly spluttered coffee everywhere when they suddenly played this! Symbol - Playing the Field?) after the taxi breaks down. They also get chased by a load of watermelons, rolling down a slopped roadway (apparently escaping off the back of a lorry?), which they catch some and eat by the road side. Another crazy aspect is when Joong Shik drives up to Tae Han's wife's house and covers his car in a multi colored blanket 'camouflage', as if to hide the fact he is a wife cheater. But the blanket suggests a loud eccentric style and makes him seem more the Philander of S Korea! Yep, its somewhat surreal this, and there is even a hen reference (I ain't going there!!) but as the script flows, it all moves along as a very funny dry (and sometimes black) comedy.

The other main player here is Eun Ji Jo, who as been in "Tears", "My Scary Girl", "Afrika" and "A Bizarre Love Triangle" and quite an actress who can play downright nutty parts, but also quite sensitive and gritty ones, too. She acts well here as the cheated wife to Tae Han's cheated husband, and if you have caught her role in "My Scary Girl", you know you can certainly expect a good performance from her. (She also reminds me facially of an old school acquaintance I knew years ago, funnily enough, albeit she was Caucasian and Eun Ji Korean Asian). Here, EJ plays the taxi driver's cheated wife, and together with Tae Han, forms the second segment of this film as the two betrayed ones getting to know each other. All three main actors are excellent, and I think this is easily another classic Korean movie. Its got a bit of a simple ending, and you don't really know where these two guys are really heading (as neither do they, so it seems) - its sort of you did it, I did it scenario. I thought that maybe the black and white ending was indicating (maybe) a nod towards "A Virgin Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors", due to Jeong Bo Seok being in this. Whatever the case, this is one fine and funny film concerning the cheater theme again - and I like this one! There is a bit of routy tooty at one point, so prepare for some bouncy springy bits! But for Korean cinema - this is great, great, great! Buy it - its another hit!
