"Knowledge Channel e", an EBS program will be carried in the middle school textbooks beginning March.
The episodes to be included are "The Laws of Shopping" aired on January 23, 2006 and "Daesami's Diary" broadcast on February 19, 2007.
These two episodes will be appeared in the unit 6-2 of the Korean language textbook for the first-year middle school students and in the book of the Korean language in practice for the first-year middle schoolers, from the upcoming March when a new school year begins. Both of the textbooks are published by Kyohak Publishing Co. Ltd.
Kim Tae-jung, deputy general manager of Kyohak Publishing Co. Ltd. who is in charge of publishing these textbooks said, "We decided to include the two episodes in the textbooks because I think the program is one of the best learning sources. That's why, students find learning fun and entertaining". He also added, "In fact, there have been a number of attempts to make other episodes of the program part of textbooks on other subjects as well".
A growing number of schools are actually using episodes from the program as a supplementary teaching material. For instance, 6 elementary school teachers gathered together and formed a group called, "Knowledge Channel e Study Club" in 2008 and the number of members has increased to more than 3,000 in just 2 years.
The leading members of the group get together once every two weeks and closely analyze the past episodes of the program. Based upon the results of the analysis, the contents are categorized to fit different school years, subjects, units and class period according to the relevant textbooks, and then posted on their website so that all members can share them.
Jeong Si-yeon, a teacher who is leading the group said, "Initially, just a few teachers got together and started the group because we all believed the program would be a great supplementary teaching material that we can actually use in the classroom.
Once we opened the website, the number of members literally exploded". She added, "It is a general consensus among school teachers that Knowledge Channel e is indeed an excellent and highly effective teaching material".
In the meantime, the program is most widely used in schools but recently, demands for its contents are rushing in from other organizations such as government agencies, corporations and military.
The producer of the program explained, "The secret for such explosive popularity probably lies in the unique way we deliver knowledge. Instead of simply stating the facts as they are, we find the elements of the facts that can touch the hearts of people".
Knowledge Channel e has been aired for five years since it was first launched in September 2005. Last year, the program received the best gender equality award from the Ministry of Gender Equality, a special media award by Amnesty International and the disabled first award.
