YesAsia Editorial Description
Wearing a long-haired wig, heavy makeup and a pair of pink stockings, a woman (Kim Hye Su) is dragged into the house by a man (Ryu Seung Ryong, Cruel Winter Blues). A little boy automatically serves food for them, then nonchalantly calls her "mother" - his eleventh. Though the woman cannot stand the boy's constant nagging over small trivial matters, the same goes for the boy as he knows she will be long gone in no time. But surprisingly, the woman continues to stick around. As she witnesses the physical abuse the boy endures from his alcoholic father, a choking sensation starts to overtake her heart.

Professional Review of "My Eleventh Mother (DVD) (Korea Version)"
|
My Eleventh Mother sees popular Korean actress Kim Hye Su, best known for playing sexy sirens in the likes of Tazza: The High Rollers and A Day For An Affair, taking on a very different role. Here, eschewing make up for the most part, she plays a down and out woman who is offered one final chance to find meaning in her life after she is landed with the job of taking care of a young boy. The film also represents a bit of a departure for director Kim Jin Sung, who previously tried his hand at comedy with Surprise and martial arts action with Geochilmaru. The film begins as a young boy called Jae Su (Kim Young Chan, also in Lovers In Paris) is introduced to the latest in a long line of stepmothers after his father (Ryu Seung Ryong, Cruel Winter Blues) brings home a wasted looking faded glamour girl (Kim Hye Su )and unceremoniously announces that she will be taking care of him. Though at first she gets on his nerves by eating all of his food and just sitting around all day playing music loudly, the two eventually warm to each other. Unfortunately, their modest happiness is soon threatened by Jae Su's abusive father and the fact that the woman's formerly rough life starts to take its toll on her health. Of course, the bonding between son and surrogate mother is pretty much inevitable, and certainly My Eleventh Mother is not the kind of film that should be watched for unexpected narrative twists and turns, with the plot being predictable and entirely formulaic as is usually the case with melodramas. However, what sets it apart from ever growing pack of similarly themed efforts are the richly developed characters and the hard edge which director Kim brings to the drama. To a large extent the film works thanks to a couple of great lead performances, both from Kim Hye Su, who is excellent and wholly believable as the wretched, washed up bargirl, and Kim Young Chan as the unfortunate little tyke, whose role is far more substantial than the usual cute kid sympathy magnets who tend to populate this kind of material. The relationship between the two builds in an unconventional and touching manner, from their early misunderstandings, battles over food and petty one-upmanship through to their hesitant affection. As a result of the time spent on character development, their small steps towards happiness and trust are genuinely moving and are certainly well deserved. It goes without saying that the film does settle into the inevitable mother-son dynamic for the last act, complete with declarations of love and devotion, though at least in this case the scenes of over the top emotion have been earned and don't suddenly appear from nowhere. The film also benefits from being quite gritty and grounded, especially during the first hour, which is relatively free of sentimental montages and teary scenes, focusing mainly on the two characters and their harsh lives in the run down shack of a home. The budget was obviously quite low, and Kim's direction is pleasantly naturalistic without ever being too intrusive, even during some of the more obviously orchestrated moments. This gives the film a certain believability and a credible emotional core to build from, which again helps during the last act dive into true melodrama. Sadly, the tragedy heaped on during the final half hour is a little unnecessary, and Kim goes too far in trying to coach a few extra tears from the viewer, when perhaps a steady hand and sticking to the film's earlier realism would have served better. Certainly, by this point it already would be hard not to feel sorry for the two, not least since actor Ryu Seung Ryong makes for a truly monstrous figure, a drunken, seemingly irredeemable brute of a crook who lurches in and out of the story, beating and cursing them both, and who is constantly threatening to split them up by selling her as a prostitute. This makes for a certain amount of tension, as whenever he appears, the viewer cringes, waiting for the fists to start flying. Unpleasant though these scenes are, they are arguably more valuable to the overall effect of the film, both in terms of keeping it harshly convincing, and in providing a further motivation for the bond that develops between boy and woman. It is the resulting feeling that My Eleventh Mother takes place in the real world rather than some sentimental dreamland that makes it a superior example of the form, and whilst unlikely to win over any viewers whose skin crawls at the mere thought of melodrama, it should be enjoyed by both devotees and casual film fans. This is largely due to the excellent performance from Kim Hye Su, who manages to elevate the film from tawdry sentiment to being a genuine slice of character driven drama, and who again shows why she is considered one of Korea's most talented actresses. by James Mudge - BeyondHollywood.com |

A Mother's Love
|
"My Eleventh Mother" is one of those kitchen sink movies about helping to understand the plight of the poor, and can illuminate what it can be like to lack standardized living, that most of us take for granted with normal privileged circumstances - and by understanding that plight of poverty, become more compassionate towards it. In this case, the poverty situation is concerning two people who don't have the simple and essential privilege of the love of a mother. Jae Su is a young boy, constantly having step mothers shuttled to him one by one, after he had lost his blood mother, and gets handed these substitute care mums by his gambling (and sometimes violent) father, who perpetually looks (apart from when he is gambling), for a permanent mother to take responsibility over Jae Su. The 'step mothers' come and go, however - very quickly. The second poverty stricken soul here, is an ex call girl played by Hye Soo Kim, who becomes the new woman (and eventual Savior) in Jae Su's life - his 11th mother (which must seem like the 11th member of a football team to Jae Su, or one short of a female version of the twelve disciples), who his father meets at a local bar, and deciding she could be a 'suitable' step mother for Jae Su. But as this new 11th possibility walks slothfully and weakly towards Jae Su's home in pink stockings, panda eyeliner and a grungy swagger - looking like death warmed up - its more the word 'unsuitable' that would spring logically to mind, considering her bleak outlook. With the initial meeting going down like a lead balloon, the woman shows a nonchalant and total lack of interest in Jae Su's welfare, as she plonks herself down in the house and lights up her cigarette, needing only to contend with her own personal circumstances immediate to her. Looking tiredly at Jae Su, she finds the whole substitute mother aspect an annoying 'going through the motions' conjuncture. Jae Su also first finds his 11th nightmare irritating - she ignores him and waves him off as if he were an annoying fly, pinches all his food from the fridge, even takes some of his food vouchers and goes shopping with them, showing little interest towards him, as she smokes, eats (all of Jae Su's food), listens to a sad song on her radio and sleeps her way through the day. Well, superficially, as that's the first impression you get of her, which as it turns out is absolutely a distorted and wrongful appearance to the inner woman she is. First impressions don't always count. Her pain is far more deeper than her dark eyes and pink stockings and insatiably need for Jae Su's food vouches would suggest. Although most of this film is contained in and around Jae Su's humble living dwellings, and also features various local characters (including bumbling and innocent 35 year old man performed by Jeong Min Hwang, who takes a fancy to Miss 11, in her pink stockings), this is quite a touching and sensitive film, that in its own somnambulist way, shows how two very poor lost souls find love and companionship, when they begin to learn and understand each other; changing personal life drudgery into love and compassion. At first, motherhood is the last thing on the ladies agenda, but when you eventually learn about her having a serious life threatening illness, and of her being abandoned by her own mother as a child, do the reasons for her lack of care become resolute. Jae Su soon finds this out, too, after he takes a battering from his irate father, after he finds Jae Su hiding a photo of his blood mother in a picture story book, instead of accepting his new step mother. As the woman tries to protect Jae Su from his father and getting hit herself, she eventually begins to bond with Jae Su, realizing his needs and dilemmas are equal, if not worse, than her own. Excellent actor Jeong Min Hwang also pops up here and there, as the bumbling 35 year old (a bit like the man he performed in "You Are My Sunshine"), living at home with his mum. Jeong Min takes a bit of a rear seat in this film, to his usual driving seat performances in "Black House" and "Happiness", but its another high quality and focused role of JM's, even in its simplicity. Here Jeong Min becomes the in between with Jae Su and the new woman on the block he takes a shine to. Hye Soo Kim is again on top form, as this quite sickly and punky character (you could imagine this woman singing a slow grungy punk song on a stage with a cigarette in her hand - and one of JS's food vouchers in another!), who by the finish, will touch your heart. She's another Korean actress I've come to love and appreciate, too, especially with her films "The Red Shoes" and "A Day for an Affair". As this film progresses, Jae Su gets more acquainted and friendly with his '11th mother', as he realizes by her bleak past, that life hasn't been too kind to her. The young actor, Young Chan Kim, performs well here, too, and you feel his quivering and emotional love increase for his new mother, as he gets ever closer and accepting of her within his feelings, especially when she begins to help Jae Su learn to adjust by him losing his actual blood mother. Funnily enough, you never fully consider that Jae Su's 11th mother was a prostitute (cuz you never see her bing one), and only view her as a prospective mother. The only hint of her past is her pink stockings and heavy make up application. But, this movie doesn't reach for those rose tinted spectacles by the outcome, and a big melodramatic conclusion awaits in the last half hour. But this story does fulfill the token of love, when the woman starts to show motherly concern towards Jae Su. Like after Jae Su was beaten by his father, she decides to take Jae Su to a fun fair, and conceals his bruises with her own make up powder (and makes him look like a girl in the outtake end credits), taking him out for the day to have his photo taken with her at the fair - like mother and son. Jae Su's life does hit home with the 11th Mother, too, and her sympathies show that she is a far more fragile woman who needed to give 'mother' love, than her seemingly hard boiled couldn't care less way, in make up and stilettos. As a woman, too, she is instinctively a mother at heart, even though she never had one herself, and when Jae Su's needs were crucially required, she could give that love he so wanted by the loss of his blood mother. A mother's love is 'home' in the heart, and a springtime of love that is eternally and always granted. So overall, this is a touching and well acted movie, with sympathetic viewpoints of poverty in the soul, as much as the outer dwelling place - and overall director Jin Sung Kim has made a film that hits home the importance of motherhood (by the lack of it) - and parenting as a whole. And for Hye Soo's portrayal here, its all well worth giving this a go. Its a sad conclusion with a happy outlook, if you can see beyond the transitory - but I'm sure you will find this a fullfilling as well as entertaining watch. |
