Independent animations are rich in experimental spirit, passion, and vision.
The 2006 INDI-ANIFEST (Chair of the Organization Committee: Lee, Yong-Bae), the only independent animation festival in Korea hosted by the Korean Association of Independent Animation (President: Lee, Yong-Bae) and the Korea Culture and Content Agency (KOCCA, CEO: Suh, Byung-Moon) took off from Oct. 27 to 31 at the Seoul Animation Center.
Celebrating its second year, the five-day festival has the theme "Cheon-Go-Ani-Bi", which means blue sky and the fact that independent animations are becoming much better, opened with a grand ceremony at 7 PM on Oct. 27, with its schedule full of exciting events.
This year's festival, in particular, introduced a new section called "Public Animation", which screens a total of 14 Korean and foreign public animations including If You were Me : Anima Vision (Park Jae-dong, and others). The Public Animation includes those animations that tackle social issues and pursue public interest like environment, labor, education or human rights.
Additionally, the "Panorama" section included those "works that provoke the audience with its compelling experimental spirit" and introduced works that almost made it to the finalists in the international competition category of the festival. The program includes Plastic Trauma: Narcissus and Ophelia, a Report of Findings on the Cause of Death of the Two Drowned Bodies by Na, Ho-Won, The Baby Penguin Got a Depression by Choi, Bong-Soo, and Taste (The Complete, Uncut Version).
A total of 192 independent works-39 works from the adult category and 153 works from the student category-were submitted to the festival and after the final screening, 44 works advanced to the finals-14 in the adult category and 30 in the student category-while a total of 12 works have been selected for the Panorama section-3 adult works and 9 student works.
The INDI-ANIFEST also held various other events along with the screening of animations, which included the screening of the KIAFA Self-Made Drama (Oct. 28 to 30), A Seminar on the Theme of Exploring For Alternative Roles by Animations' Public Actions (Oct. 30, 7:30 PM), and Night of the Undead, which promoted the harmony and unity of makers of independent animations (Oct. 28, 7:30 PM).
On the closing ceremony on Oct. 31, 7:30 PM, winning works for a Grand Prize, Excellent Prizes (Adult Category/Student Category), Special Prizes (Jury's Selection/KIAFA), and a Public Prize were announced.
