Film director Kwak Commits Suicide

Film director Kwak Ji-gyoon (his real name is Kwak Jeong-gyun), famous for his work, "Portrait of Young Days" (1990), was found dead at his home in Daejeon Monday. He was 56.

Kwak's elder brother reported his death to police, upon discovering him lying dead when he visited the director's home as he failed to have contact for several days, according to police.

He was reported to have left a note with briquettes burned out beside him.

The note reads "It's distressing and hard as I have no job to do".

"Director Kwak has suffered from depression for 10 years", a friend of him said. "He has been troubled as he could not produce films".

Among his films are "Walking All the Way to Heaven" (1992) and "Wanderer in Winter" (1986)

'젊은 날의 초상' 곽지균 감독, 자살

영화 '젊은 날의 초상' '걸어서 하늘까지' '겨울 나그네' 등을 만들며 1980-1990년대를 풍미한 곽지균(본명 곽정균) 감독이 25일 대전 자택에서 숨진 채 발견됐다. 향년 56세.

영화계에 따르면 곽 감독의 형은 동생이 며칠째 연락이 되지 않자 이날 오후 동생의 집을 찾았다가 숨진 곽 감독을 발견하고 경찰에 신고했다.

발견 당시 곽 감독은 다 탄 연탄 옆에서 숨진 상태였으며 노트북에 유서를 남겨놓았다.

유서에는 "일이 없어 괴롭고 힘들다"라고 적은 것으로 알려졌다.

곽 감독의 한 지인은 "곽 감독이 10년 전부터 우울증을 앓아왔다"며 "영화를 만들지 못해 괴로워했다"고 전했다.

1980년 영화 '깃발없는 기수'의 조감독으로 영화계에 입문한 고인은 1986년 '겨울 나그네'로 감독 데뷔를 했다.

이후 '두 여자의 집'(1987) '그 후로도 오랫동안'(1989) '상처'(1989) '젊은 날의 초상'(1991) '걸어서 하늘까지'(1992) '장미의 나날'(1994) '깊은 슬픔'(1997) '청춘'(2000) 등을 만들었다.
