Film 'Mother - 2009' Tops Weekend Box Office

Director Bong Joon-ho's latest film "Mother" has topped the weekend box office tally over Hollywood blockbuster "Terminator Salvation". The Korean Film Council reported that "Mother - 2009", which opened last Thursday on 756 screens nationwide, has drawn nearly 1.04 million moviegoers so far, taking the top spot in the domestic box office. Director Bong's new film is moving at the same pace as award-winning "Thirst", which broke the 1-million mark in the shortest time this year.

Movie critics cite curiosity as the reason driving the film's popularity. The story about a mother's desperate struggle to clear her son of a murder charge has won public attention even before the film was released. The star-studded cast featuring venerable Kim Hye-ja and Won Bin, as well as an invitation to the Cannes International Film Festival, have also prompted people to see the movie.

Coming in second in the box office tally was "Terminator Salvation", followed by "Angels and Demons", "My Girlfriend is an Agent", and "Coraline and the Secret Door".
