Ranked as the highest-rated Korean drama of all time, First Love scored a monstrous 65.8 percentile in TV ratings during its broadcast in 1996 to 1997. Written by the late Jo So Hye whose filmography includes Mothers and Sisters and Paper Crane, the drama features a star-studded cast that includes Bae Yong Joon, Choi Soo Jong (Emperor Of The Sea), Choi Ji Woo (Winter Sonata), Lee Seung Yeon (Mun Hee), and Cha Tae Hyun (Flowers for my Life), all appearing before their heydays. Depicting the afflictions of youth, the drama brings you the moving story of two brothers who live in the poor suburbs of Seoul with their father, trying to get through the hardships of life. Bae Yong Joon plays the younger brother of Choi Soo Jong, a rebellious law student who gives up a promising career and joins a gangster so he can seek revenge on his family's suffering. A classic triangle love story, the drama sees the two brothers in friction over the same woman (played by actress Lee Seung Yeon). Bae would go on to star in such hit dramas as Hotelier and Winter Sonata, eventually earning him the nickname of Yon-sama and becoming one of today's leading hallyu stars. Incidentally, his Winter Sonata partner Choi Ji Woo also stars in First Love, playing a rich college student who falls in love with Bae's character.
When Chan Woo (Bae Yong Joon) finds out that his high school crush Hyo Kyung (Lee Seung Yeon) is seeing his own brother Chan Hyuk (Choi Soo Jong), his heart falls to the ground. But not all is rosy between Hyo Kyung and Chan Hyuk as Hyo Kyung's rich gangster father, unhappy about his precious girl dating a poor aspiring artist, wreaks havoc in their relationship. When a mysterious accident leaves Chan Hyuk in a paralyzed state, Chan Woo plots revenge against Hyo Kyung's father by joining the underground world of the mafia. Waiting patiently in the wings is Suk Hee (Choi Ji Woo) who has never given up on her love for Chan Woo.

It's been cut too much!

When this drama broadcasted in Korea, it has 66 episodes, but this version published only 40 episodes, over 1/3 length been cut, it's a good drama work, but it'd been cut too much, is there any possible "Yesasia.com" could ask the company who published this "First Love" republish a un-cut 66 episodes version? If they willing to republish complete version, I'll buy it again! |

Watchable but not great
| This is an extremely long series. If you are a fan of Bae Yong Jun and Choi Ji Woo as a couple, you will be extremely disappointed. BYJ was not the main character in the series, and CJW hardly appeared in the series. This story was actually interesting and the acting was not bad either. |

disappointed

i eagerly bought this series as i am enamoured of the acting by choi and bae (winter sonata). well, i was disappointed because the two lead actors (the eldest son and his first love) are bad actors, the love story between them ridiculous (everytime they met, their stupidity led to more unnecessary tragedy -- i have yet to meet more stupider characters). half way through, i simply fast forward when these two characters are about to meet again. what i was not disappointed in though, was the (again) astounding acting by bae and choi (who unfortunately, though billed as lead, made only cameo appearance), but their (although scant) sceneries are electrifying/riveting. sigh! i just wish the director/producer weren't that stupid in not giving at least 1/4 of the series to more acting between choi and bae. i take my hats off to choi and bae. |
