In the run up to the 2010 New York Asian Film Festival the Korean Cultural Service is currently showing free screenings of Korean films. This is the third series of free screenings that the Cultural Service has held and this year focuses on some traditional Korean summer blockbusters. The series kicked off May 11 and will wrap up June 29.
The next film playing on May the 25th is "The Accidental Gangster and the Mistaken Courtesan", action comedy starring Lee Jeong-jae ("Il Mare", 2000). Pushing Korea's obsession with gangster movies back into the year 1724, the movie stars LEE as a newly promoted crime boss who must rescue his lover from the grips of another gangster head, thereby causing an all out war. "The Sword with No Name" (2009) playing June 15 is yet another lush period piece this time focusing on the legendary Empress Myeongseong played by Soo-ae ("Once in a Summer", 2006). The last screening on June the 29th is the Park Chan-wook blockbuster "JSA - Joint Security Area" which became the biggest selling movie of the year when it was released in 2000. Starring current 'it' actors Lee Byeong-Heon ("A Bittersweet Life", 2005) and Song Kang-ho ("Secret Sunshine", 2007) this murder mystery thriller focuses on North/South Korean relations through the eyes of soldiers who cross over the border at night to play cards.
The movies begin at 7:00 and are showing in the Tribeca Cinema New York. This program will be followed by the NY Asian Film Festival which begins June 25 and plays through to July 8.
