YesAsia Editorial Description

Friend is the emotional, violent and compelling story of four schoolmates growing up over two decades in Pusan. After being very close during their school days, two of the boys go away to college whereas the other two stay at home. When the boys return from their schooling they are shocked to discover that one of their friends is in prison and the other is on drugs. But this is just the beginning for these two boys who eventually find themselves fighting for opposing sides of a vicious and deadly gang war.

Directed by Kwak Kyung Taek, Friend broke the all-time box office record when it was released in Korea in 2001. Starring Jang Dong Gun (Taegukgi), Yoo Oh Sung (Attack The Gas Station), Seo Tae Hwa (Public Enemy), and Jung Woon Taek (My Boss, My Hero), the film is an epic and brutal study of friendship, loyalty, and betrayal.

Professional Review of "Friend (Hong Kong Version)"

February 27, 2006

This professional review refers to Friend (Hong Kong Version)

As you might have heard, up to date, Friend is the highest grossed film in Korean film history. It is the most successful Korean film ever made. When it was exported to Hong Kong, the reaction of the audience, however, was not that consistently positive.

The plot of the story is quite simple, It follows the cliches of the same genre. Four friends grew up together in the 1970s and end up in different life paths. Joon-suk (Yu Oh-Sung) and Dong-su (Jang Dong-Gun) become gangsters while Sang-taek (Seo Tae-Hwa) and Joong-ho (Jung Woon-Tak) further their studies and enroll in college. Although they are leading a very different life, what is not changed is their life-long friendship, or is it?

To the Hong Kong audience, this plot certainly resembles so many gangster movies, with the most prominent example of Young and Dangerous. Having said that, does it mean this film is not worth to look at? From the rating I gave this film, you'll probably know the answer. Borrowing a term from independent filmmaker Rick Schmidt, this film is an "adult movie". By that I do not mean it contains pornographic or ultra violent materials, what I mean is that Kwak Kyung-Taek succeeds in showing us the complicated adult social interactions. It is a movie about the difficulties of a tough life. If you are looking for something that is filled with nudity, sex, car chase, or mood music melodrama, I am sorry, this is not the film you would like to see. The genuine emotions and personalities constructed by the director are what make this film a valuable viewing experience.

Director Kwak Kyung-Taek shows sympathy toward his characters. Unlike many gangster films in which the gangster protagonist is always praised and glorified, Joon-suk is totally different. What makes Joon-suk appealing is not his gangster background. It is all about his authentic human nature. He cares about his friends, he is aware of his own position and is able to provide his most sincere advice to his friend Sang-taek and prevent him from falling into the dark side. Dong-su is supposed to be the antagonist of this film. But he is not that evil. He will remember his childhood life with his buddies, he will heed Joon-suk's advice even though they belong to the opposing crime families. Kwak does not radicalize or develop his characters in an extreme manner. The characters appear so real and profound. It is the reason why we will feel so touching and really commiserate with the misfortunes of the characters.

The cinematography is surprisingly good. Although there are quite a number of violent scenes, the camera angles and the composition are brilliantly arranged. It results in many remarkable moments for the audience. For instance, in the funeral of Joon-suk's father, Dong-su says farewell to Joon-suk and steps into the dark. Explicitly, his exit indicates that he is going to join another crime family, while in a metaphorical sense, his departure into the black also symbolizes that he is entering a dark path where there is no return.

Friend is an entertaining flick, and it is also a piece of art. Not too many filmmakers can maintain a balance between this two aspects of the film craft, but apparently Kwak Kyung-Taek knows the way.

Cool guy(s) - Yu Oh-Sung, Jang Dong-Gun

:] Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
i guess i'm late for everything. hehe. although i rented it at blockbuster, this movie was good regardless. it made me question what i would choose, loyalty or friends? it's hard and it would be horrible to decide, but in the movie they had too, and i think it was worthwhile to see that everyone has a heart despite their backgrounds. the ending was confusing to me, but good either way. i love this movie!

Once again, this disc is advertised as R3 with the box art confirming it, BUT the disc is actually R0 and will play anywhere!

lacks love story Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
The film is great cinematography wise and the story is very emphatetic..but one thing that seriously could have been improved was some of the focus of the film.
The film overly concentrates on two characthers of the film and pretty much forsakes all the rest... It would have also been great if there were more love interests in the film, or if the love interest that was in the film could have been developed more. Overall though, the film is pretty excellent..though it should be noted that its pretty much a korean gangster film.

very nostalgic Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
i think this movie is more for guys than girls. This isn't some love movie. its about friendship. this is about four friends. One is a "leader" (joon), a "follower" (Dong), a "nerd" (San-Taek), and an "average" (jook) guy. Joon-Suk treats San-taek as a person to talk to when he has problems while he treats Dong as his sidekick. Joon-suk has always had leadership until Dong joins Joon-suk's hated gang leader's gang. during the movie, joon-suk's gang secretly tries to assasinate Dong himself. Dong instead kills Joon-suk's loyalists and misunderstandingly thinks that Joon-Suk sent them against him and sends his own people to infiltrate Joon-suks gang. ironically at the end Joon-suk tells Dong to leave for Hawaii until things calm down but he feels like he is superior to Joon-suk since Joon-suk has become too soft. So he tells Joon-suk to go himself and Joon-suk does that. But as soon as Joon-suk leaves Dong decides to himself that he will go instead. But as soon as he gets outside his own loyalists assassinates him. In the end San-taek, whom is telling the story, realizes that of out of the four friends, Joon-suk and Dong were best friends from out of them.
