YesAsia Editorial Description

Are you ready to rumble? Director Kim Jin Sung throws his metaphorical hat into the squared circle with Geochilmaru - The Showdown, a thoroughly exciting, no holds barred, fight filled extravaganza that looks to be the latest Korean film to align itself with the rich tradition of martial arts cinema, a legacy that extends from even before Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon to Tony Jaa's Tom Yum Goong! Shot on digital video, this modestly budgeted actioner centers on the fates of eight extremely talented martial artists who all hail from different walks of life. Each and every one of these eager, gifted combatants has been invited to travel to an isolated mountainous region. But for what purpose?

Once they reach their destination, these eight very different men are forced to do battle, engaging in a formal competition to determine the best of the best. The prize? It seems that the last man standing in this free-for-all martial arts competition will then win the opportunity to go toe to toe with the mysterious host of the tournament, an enigmatic fighter known only by the name Geochilmar! As these men wage war for the throne of the Murmigjon, who will win out? Instead of relying on computer-generated images or high-flying wire work, the director hired real life martial artists to do all their own stunts. Featuring wall to wall action, unbelievable physical acrobatics, and a special appearance from singer Kim C, Geochilmaru - The Showdown is one movie that's got a real kick!

Professional Review of "Geochilmaru - The Showdown (Hong Kong Version)"

March 6, 2006

This professional review refers to Geochilmaru
South Korea checks in with their take on the martial arts tournament film. You know the style; think Enter the Dragon, Lau Kar Leung's Heroes of the East or the (slightly silly, but quite entertaining) One-Armed Boxer Versus the Flying Guillotine. The backstory for this one, of course, is updated for the Web generation. Eight martial artists from different personal and pugilistic backgrounds are regulars on a martial arts themed website. One day, they're summoned to fight the mysterious and highly skilled host of the website... an enigmatic figure named Geochilmaru.

Our fighters are known only by their pseudonyms, and are predominantly played by real martial artists. There's a judo wrestler, a bantamweight boxer, a tall, powerful kickboxer, a fluid, acrobatic wushu specialist, a female wushu master, a street fighter, a taekwando instructor and a film stunt man. On their way to the meeting place, however, they're presented with a change in plan: only one of them will get to meet Geochilmaru, and they'll have to choose a representative themselves.

Naturally, there's only one way to choose. Their bus stops near the rendezvous point and they scatter, intending to meet up in pairs and fight for the right to meet their host. Necklaces are given to each of them, to be claimed by the victor after the end of each match: only someone with all eight necklaces will be able to face Geochilmaru.

This film was shot on a shoestring, and it shows: it's shot on digital video, and a great deal of the acting and writing is clumsy, particularly near the start of the film. Once the battle for the necklaces starts, however, the film starts to show its strengths - the fights are gritty and look good for the most part, doubtless helped by the participants' real-life proficiency. And they're interesting matches, too, in the grand tradition of martial arts cinema, matching up very different martial arts traditions against each other. One of the highlights is a match between Musashi66, a kickboxer, and Mohican, a talented wushu fighter. A little more screen time is given to the stuntman, who's evidently out of his league and there to provide comic relief, and the street fighter, who has a great deal more tenacity than technique.

Geochilmaru isn't a particularly good film. I suspect that a general audience of people not into martial arts would be put off by the weak story and acting at the start of the film, and the single-minded focus on fight scenes afterwards. Martial arts fans, however, might be interested to see a modern film done the old-school way: no wires and no CGI, and a bunch of different martial arts disciplines all in the same film.

I'd be very surprised, too, if this is the last we see of some of the players. Several of them (in particular Musashi66 and Mohican, the kickboxer and wushu fighter) have obvious ability and act well given the film they're in, and I'd love to see more of them. Hopefully we'll see South Korea, like Thailand with Ong Bak and Tom Yum Goong, producing more martial arts cinema in the future.

Is this a film or what? I know that this is some kind of an experimental movie, but this is too much for viewers to bear. Too glad, i was able to finish it though. Huh

uh.. Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
geochilmaru was okay? i suppose. i had expected more action and comedy because of the cast, however it was a disappointment to watch. in similar contrast this movie reminded me of the American movie 'Bulletproof monk.' i guess i would recommend it, but it's also a forgettable movie, nothing to deep to remember.

Showdown = Letdown Customer Review Rated Bad 1 - 1 out of 10
I came into this movie expecting an awfully cliched storyline, accompanied by some terrible acting, but made up by some great fight scenes. And make no mistake, apart from some interesting narratives on the philosphy of fighting, the plot remains poor. And despite some potentially tense (and sometimes comedic) moments, the acting is dire throughout. But I didn't care, all I wanted to see was some cool fighting. Unfortunately, by the end of the first real fight, I realised that I wouldn't even be graced with some good action. With fighting fans being treated to the latest from Tony Jaa (Tom Yum Goong) and Donnie Yen (Sha Po Lang), Geochilmaru has a tough job in trying to impress viewers. Admittedly, those movies have a far better budget to work from and star quality fighters playing the lead roles. But I was still willing to give Geochilmaru a chance. And yet it still let me down. The main problem I found with the action was that the fighting, although performed by real fighters, is incredibly unexciting. Only a few times did I believe that one of the combatants had been hit (or landed) a solid blow. The fight choreography was too slow and laborious to make me believe that any of the fighters looked like they were in a real fight. The action simply isn't portrayed well enough to make it believable. If it weren't for the actress playing Ironpalm being nice looking, or fighters 'Mohican' and 'Musasi66' having cool peronas, I would have laughed my way through this movie. Honestly. I suppose the music is quite good in places though, but even that quickly becomes annoying. And some of the background scenery is nice. But ultimately, the whole Geochilmaru package is incredibly disappointing, and will not only fail to impress movie fans, but fans of the fighting genre.
