Korean director Gina Kim'a latest project-in-development, "The Housemaid - 2010" a remake of Kim Ki-young's 1960 classic "The Housemaid - 1960", is selected to take part in Rotterdam's co-production market, CineMart. The market runs Jan 25 – 29 in conjunction with the International Film Festival Rotterdam which runs Jan 21 – Feb 1.
KIM's project, being developed by Seoul-based production and distribution company Mirovision, was one of 36 projects selected for CineMart from over 500 submissions. KIM's feminist reworking of the original is likely to generate much interest. The 1960 masterpiece screened this year at several festivals including Cannes, Tokyo, and Pusan in a digitally restored version funded by Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Foundation.
"The Housemaid - 1960" is a drama in which a mild-mannered piano teacher succumbs to the wiles of a sultry young maid, bringing a spiral of ruin to his family. The film was a huge commercial success upon its release, so much so, that original director KIM himself remade it twice as Woman of Fire (1971) and Woman of Fire '82.
Gina Kim is director of the first U.S. – Korea co-production, "Never Forever" (2007) and the award-winning "Invisible Light" (2003). Her new project is modestly budgeted at US$ 2.5 million and is expected to find a co-production partner at CineMart.
