Girls' Generation made music history yesterday, becoming the first Korean girl group to rank No. 1 on Japan's prestigious Oricon chart with their latest album.

Oricon's official website showed that the girls' second Japanese single "Gee", which was released on October 20, sold 3,456 copies on Monday to take first place on the daily singles chart.

It is the greatest feat any Korean girl group has achieved in the Japanese music market. No Asian girl group has topped the chart either.

"Gee" had also come in at second place on the weekly singles chart, making them the first non-Asian female group to rank in the top three in the past 30 years.

The last international female group to penetrate the top 10 was the five-member Irish group, The Nolans, in December 1980.

"Gee" has fared well on various music charts as well, placing at No. 1 on iTunes music video chart, MUSICO, recochuku's mobile and video music chart and video clip chart. They have also promoted their latest release on several TV shows including Asahi TV's "Music Station", NHK's "Music Japan" and Fuji TV's "HEY! HEY! HEY!"

Meanwhile, the girls returned to the local music scene with their third mini-album "Hoot", released online on Monday, and will give their comeback performance on KBS' televised music show "Music Bank" on October 29.
