"A Witch's Romance" was the latest drama to be a part of the "Noona Romance" trend in Korea - older women dating younger men. There is nothing particularly unique about the drama premise, Uhm Jung-hwa plays a 39 year old single woman, Bang Ji-yeon, who continually finds herself attached to 25 year old Yoon Dong-ha (Park Seo-joon).

However, what stole the show were the characters themselves. Especially Yoon Dong-ha, at times adorably sweet and mature but at others revealing his hot temper and reminding the viewers (and Ban Ji-yeon) of his young age. Ban Ji-yeon, while at first was simply a cold-hearted "witch" proved to be another dynamic character, at times strong and independent but at others confused by her own feelings for the younger man. Many viewers will probably agree with me on one point: the drama could have been 16 episodes of simply the main characters interacting with each other and it still would have been a hit.

But, there is one point of the drama that I've heard complaints about - the ending. The final two episodes were, to some, not what they had signed up for.

One of the themes that the drama harped the most on, throughout all 16 episodes, was Ban Ji-yeon's age and the fact that she was woefully unwed and worse - single. Ban Ji-yeon's mother, her college friends, her ex-fiancée, Yoon Dong-ha's father - everyone, it seemed, had to have their say about how soon (immediately) she should be tying the knot.

It seemed the stage was being set for a wedding ending, Ji-yeon went to England for a year as an exchange reporter and returned to a much more stable Yoon Dong-ha - back in med school and well on his way to becoming a doctor. Dong Ha had received not only his father's blessing, but also an earful about how he should be marrying Ban Ji-yeon as soon as possible.

And so, the final few scenes of episode 16 showed the cast gearing up for a wedding. I sighed at the predictability of it all - until the bride and groom were introduced. In a surprise, twist ending, Ban Ji-yeon's mother was marrying Trouble Maker's CEO.

Many fans, according to social media, were hoping for a Ji-yeon/Dong Ha wedding and disliked the ending immensely.

But, Dong Ha is still young and I was pleasantly surprised that Ji-yeon was willing to postpone marriage, despite her age, until Dong Ha was out of school and working. She had turned down his proposals, instead choosing to give him time to graduate and grow into his future. It showed her maturity and also her tendency to "stick it to the man" and flaunt convention. Strong, independent Ban Ji-yeon struck again in the end.

What did you think? Was the ending of "A Witch's Romance" the ending that you had been hoping for?
