Gwangju City to establish a cultural-contents technology research institute

A Gwangju branch of the National Library of Korea and a cultural-contents technology research institute will be built in Gwangju in 2008.

Gwangju City recently announced that last December, the congress passed a law authorizing, as part of its 2008 government budget plan, the release of KRW 1B for the establishment of a Gwangju branch of the National Library of Korea, as well as of KRW 500M for the labor expenses that will be incurred by the building of a cultural-contents technology research institute in the city. Gwangju City will begin building these two major cultural infrastructure facilities in 2008.

The construction of the Gwangju branch of the National Library of Korea and of the cultural-contents technology research institute, major national projects requiring national budgets of up to KRW 130B each, will begin in 2009 and is expected to be completed by the second half of 2011.

The Gwangju branch of the National Library of Korea will be a digital library boasting full-scale digital environments, digital reading rooms, interactive exchanges among users, and the integration of analog books and digital books in an atmosphere that makes user access easy and convenient.

The aforementioned cultural-contents technology research institute is expected to secure Korea's competitiveness in the global cultural-contents industry and to help Gwangju become a cultural mecca by nurturing the nation's cultural industry, which is expected to embark on future cultural projects in the game, video, and animation formats.

"We have been exerting every effort possible to be able to build a national-level library and a cultural-contents technology research institute in Gwangju", said an official of Gwangju City.

"This will be an important opportunity for Gwangju to develop into a hub in the southwestern region".
