[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Master - God of Noodles" Episode 6

Get ready to stop breathing every few minutes and keep any comforting items or pets nearby, because episode six of "Master - God of Noodles" is one intense ride. Our characters drop their facades and others reveal the effort it takes to maintain them, reluctant alliances are formed and we have a birth secret on our hands if ever I have seen one. Between the tight storytelling and torturous food shots, this episode is a health hazard.

Let me first address the elephant in the room here. Da-hae (Gong Seung-yeon) is so very much Gil-do's (Cho Jae-hyun) daughter and I am sure it will be confirmed soon. She may be an illegitimate child or a tie he needed to cut before entering Goongrakwon. What I find hard to believe is that he allows her to live. Blood did not stop him from killing his father. Blood does not stop abuse, neglect and abandonment, but perhaps this is the one low he will not stoop to.

Even if he does, Do-kkoo (Jo Hee-bong) is here. His is a tragic character, because he tries to protect the innocent and gets bitten by the guilty in the process. I do not see him surviving this and joining hands with a monster to protect Da-hae from it kind of points to such a fate as well. Speaking of fate, I like that the show acknowledges it as a chosen concept, rather than trying to hide it due to its use as plot padding. The narration also adds to the style a lot.

This episode is very woman-centric in some ways and this is something I personally appreciate about the series. Women can sometimes be either tools or emotional weaknesses in revenge works. To see characters like Kang-sook (Lee Il-hwa), Mi-ja (Seo Yi-sook) and our leading ladies here, who are all different and written with their own virtues and flaws, their own goals and obstacles being given focus is very satisfying. I hope they remain valuable characters in the future as well.

Much like these ladies, Myeong (Chun Jung-myung) has his own facade. He is still the person we know, he just understands the importance of patience and vigilance now. I am very curious as to what he has been doing for three years. He has clearly studied cooking, but networked, too. He looks so on top of things and I cannot help but wonder how he formed such a good system of information.

Myeong is an interesting character for a male lead in a Korean drama. He is the protagonist, but he is also a funnel for the upcoming plans to destroy Gil-do created by many others. This is a clear ensemble work and I hope it remains this way, because it takes more than one good ingredient to make a satisfying dish.

"Master - God of Noodles" is directed by Kim Jong-yeon and Lim Se-joon, written by Chae Seung-dae and features Chun Jung-myung, Cho Jae-hyun, Jung Yoo-mi and Lee Sang-yeob.
