[HanCinema's Drama Review] "The Woman who Married Three Times" Episode 24

In this episode we get confirmation that Gwang-mo is, in fact, much more childish than he is genuinely romantic. Granted, the fact that he ditched his fiance at the altar was probably a pretty good clue of that. But that was an eternity ago and lately he's seemed almost like a passable romantic lead for Hyeon-soo. Well it's much more difficult to keep that impression seriously when we see the man at home, with his mom, arguing, while we can clearly see superhero masks hanging in the background of his room.

I like how none of the men in this drama are perfect- they all have pretty glaring flaws that they might or might not be able to fix, regardless of how handsome they are. Take Joon-goo. While his wife is freaking out over the possibility that her mother has been seriously injured, Joon-goo is...doing his job. It actually looks like a pretty dumb job now that we get to see it. And yet Joon-goo seems far more excited by his job than anything in his personal life.

In some ways it's hard to blame him. Goodness knows Eun-soo is struggling. The woman is always asking "are you happy?" when she's in a difficult situation. I think I know why- Eun-soo is constantly facing emotional setbacks and struggles. Most of the time she's just miserable. The best way Eun-soo can rationalize what she's doing is by taking solace in the fact that at least other people are doing well.

For what it's worth Seul-gi is doing all right at this point. But I'm much more worried about Chae Rin. Yes, she should have noticed the warning signs prior to getting married- should have realized that Tae-won's ambivalence about the situation was a strong clue that marrying him was a bad idea. Watching her struggle here, though, it's just pitiable. The worst of it is that Chae Rin could be doing a passable job as a stepmother if someone would only give her some advice.

Then again, isn't that the problem all of these characters face? Being stuck in a lousy situation, and not having any idea what to do because they can't ask anyone else for help? It's really telling how Hyeon-soo's emotional well-being has benefited from finally being able to speak openly and honestly with Joo-ha about her conflicted emotions. Joo-ha, too, benefits a lot from this honesty, and for the most part goes through this episode fairly close to her usual bubbly cheerful self. Now there's some food for thought.
