[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Tunnel - Drama" Episode 9

A frightening, yet not unanticipated twist is finally delivered in episode nine of "Tunnel - Drama" and it is about to cause many new concerns for our leads and new questions for us. The time has also come to learn more about Jeong Ho-yeong's past and the focus starts to shift toward finding out what drives him and what has caused the particular preferences that seem to govern his M.O.

In the most unsurprising twist ever, coroner Mok Jin-woo (Kim Min-sang) is our original killer, giving us a lot of new things to consider. It has been clear that he is hiding things and although this is the most obvious twist, it is not a disappointing one, since the mystery is not the drama's sole appeal. I am curious to see his own story and even more so how he managed to hide his identity and still be hired by the police for his job.

This brings me to the issue of "Gwang-ho lite" (Cha Hak-yeon). Judging by Jin-woo's cap, he is the one who killed the young man. This means that the killer figures are only two, but it still does not explain the destroyed case files. Is there even an accomplice within the force or was the fire really an accident? If it was intentional, could a random person such as our deadly coroner used to be achieve that damage unnoticed?

Switching over to Jeong Ho-yeong (Heo Sung-tae), I get the feeling that the mystery around his past and motivation could be directly connected to Mok Jin-woo. This would work just fine as a simple copycat case, but perhaps the two influenced one another in a more tangible way than just as inspiration. I hope this is the case, as it would make Jeong more crucial to the story than just as a red herring for the old murders.

The episode enters guilt-induced angst territory for our male leads and damsel in distress territory for Jae-i (Lee Yoo-young), since their strong ties to this case are clearly written for drama. I trust the series to maintain Jae-i's so far solid agency throughout. Things such as featuring female serial killers and including Jae-i's great handling of the victim-blaming detectives are also a good indication that the creators do not take women lightly.

We are now almost two thirds into the series, so I am curious as to where things are going. Now that the killers are known and their as well as Jae-i's past is all we have left to figure out aside from the paranormal element, I wonder if the latter will get more development. It would be a shame if the crime case instantly closed the time travel mystery, so I hope its resolution is good.

"Tunnel - Drama" is directed by Sin Yong-hwi and Kim Seong-min-I, written by Lee Eun-mi-III and features Choi Jin-hyuk, Yoon Hyun-min and Lee Yoo-young.
