[HanCinema's Film Review] Korean Weekend Box Office (2011.06.03~2011.06.05)

Korean Weekend Box Office (2011.06-03~2011.06.05)

Tickets sales this past weekend were more evenly spread but "Kung Fu Panda 2" still holds onto to number one with 894,141 admissions. The animation comedy is approaching 3 million and with the Memorial Day holiday happening in Korea this weekend it will soar past that mark in no time at all.

"X-Men: First Class" was released this week and it almost managed to dislodge the animation giant with 633,166 admissions. "X-Men: First Class" is staking its claim as the best in the series and in it we discover how the legendary heroes all came to be. Still at number three is the Korean film "Sunny - 2010" with 385,513 tickets sold. Sunny has managed to hold its pace at the box office and has just past the 4 million mark. "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" follows with 242,174 admissions. The hype has probably died down on this one as the crowds and critics come to release that this one is set to be the worst in the series.

Choi Ik-hwan's directorial drama "Mama" jumps up three spots from last week to settle at number five. This omnibus drama has only managed a modest 127,174 admissions total but that is good enough to push it past Antti Jokinen's "The Resident" which is receiving very poor reviews. Park In-je's "Moby Dick" is at seven with just 5,551 admissions. This action film stars Hwang Jung-min, Jin Goo, Kim Min-hee, and Kim Sang-ho as a news team investigates a mysterious explosion in Seoul.

Cho Un's "Head" drops sharply from last weekend's number four to this week's eight. This action thriller has 59,663 total admissions to its name and is unlikely to have any more impact on the charts. The last Korean film in this weeks chart is the omnibus film "Sorry, Thanks" with 1,767 admissions. Finally at at number ten is the foreign film "Copacabana" by writer/director Marc Fitoussi, claiming just 1,298 admissions.
