Korean Weekend Box Office (2011.06.24~2011.06.26)
Amazingly "Sunny - 2010" finds itself at number one! The film was released on May 4th and has remained in the charts since. It has been dodging the Hollywood blockbusters and staying in the top tier for weeks, and now it stands on top with a total of 5,726,856 admissions.
"Kung Fu Panda 2" had a good run but even this animation giant couldn't mute the success of Kang Hyeong-cheol's "Sunny - 2010". The hard-hitting panda scored 240,090 admissions this weekend and is nearing 5 million total admissions. There is a new entry into the charts in the form of Juhn Jai-hong's "Poongsan". The film is written and co-produced by Kim Ki-duk. In it, Yoon Kye-sang is assigned to deliver messages to and from separated Korean families across the border Things get complicated when he is asked by a South Korean government agent to smuggle in a high-ranking North Korean defector's lover. "Poongsan" saw some 239,387 admissions in its first week, also overtaking the monstrously successful "Kung Fu Panda 2". At number four is "X-men: First Class" with 228,618, the film is approaching 2.5 million tickets sold in Korea.
The Korean film "White: The Melody of the Curse" remains at five this week, drawing in almost exactly the same number of viewers it did the previous week. "Super 8" is next at six with 86,734, but it to appears stagnant as the bigger films enact a greater pull on the numbers. "The Lincoln Lawyer" is going nowhere at seven, sucking in another 85,183 to add to its total of 258,965 at Korean cinemas.
"Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen" is a Hong Kong martial arts film by Andrew Lau. It's a continuation of the television series "Fist of Fury", with the lead having been made famous by Bruce Lee's role the film "Fist of Fury" (1972). Next is "Green Lantern" which has not been impressing in Korea and abroad. It has failed to cash in on the numerous successes shared by other comic book adaptations that have hit the silver screen this year. At number ten is the Korea animation drama "Green Days: Dinosaurs and I", a commentary on how rapid modernisation and capitalization has impacted on Korean society.
