[HanCinema's Film Review] Korean Weekend Box Office 2011.08.12 ~ 2011.08.14

Korean Weekend Box Office (2011.08-12~2011.08.14)

South Korea is enjoying its Independence Day this Monday August 15th. Even so the numbers this past weekend don't suggest that an overwhelming number of people have chosen to spend it at the theatres. "Sector 7" as been displaced by the period action piece "Arrow, The Ultimate Weapon" as critics and filmgoers discover a serious lack of substances to Korea first big budget 3D action flick.

"Sector 7" only managed 246,465 admissions, down massively from last weekends 1,160,483. Its lead actress Ha Ji-won has been heralded as Korea's Angelina Jolie as she chose to do a lot of the stunts herself. But even her presence wasn't enough for this summer blockbuster to outdo "The Smurfs" which claimed second with 273,158 admissions. "Leafie, A Hen Into The Wild" follows at four. This popular Korean animation broke the million mark and is hoping to break even with its goal of surpassing 1.5 million admissions.

"Quick" has lost some steam as well as the fight for seats amoung this summer's top films continues. Korean films have done well the past two months but few have been able to really soar with the competition being so tough. And despite the big Hollywood names "Cowboys and Aliens" has been receiving harsh criticism all round, largely centring on the directorial decision and its jarring tonal pace and rhythm. Still the film opened this past week and claimed 133,514 admissions in Korea thus far. "The Front Line" drops from last week's number three to this week's seven with just under 3 million admissions. . This is again evidence of a highly competitive summer line-up in Korea.

"Detective Conan: Quarter of Silence" is still around at eight with 99,054 tickets sold and the modern take on the French book "La planete des singes" entitled "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" follows at number nine. Many were initially sceptical, and indeed many still are, but the film has proven to be able to stand on its own feet in the shadow of the French novel and the 1968 American classic film. Lastly "Sunny - 2010" still lingers as it moves to 7.5 million admissions, what an amazing response this film has received from the Korea public.
