HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2011.01.06 ~ 2012.01.08)

It has been four weeks at the top now for "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" and the big budget espionage flick has banked a total of 6,243,796 admissions here in Korea. This past weekend saw it add 477,851 to that as the film continues to be a big crowd pleaser.

New to the charts is Kwon Chil-in's drama "Wonderful Radio" staring Lee Min-jeong, Lee Jeong-jin, Lee Gwang-soo, and Kim Jeong-tae. In its first weekend out in theatres it managed to take second place with 281,296 admissions. Close behind this new Korean offering is "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" with 223,500, bringing it closer to the 2 million mark. Park Hee-gon's "Perfect Game" continues to hover in the top half and this week it does so with 133,580 admissions.

Takashi Yamazaki's "Friends: Naki on Monster Island" remains at number five with 118,342. The Japanese animation was released in its home country on 17 December and is based on the children's book "Naita Aka Oni" by Hirosuke Hamada. The most expensive Korea film to date is next, just scraping past the 2 millions admissions mark. "My Way" has been a huge disappointment and is unlikely to regain any of the ground it has lost while on circuit as its profitability continues to be challenged. Chris Gorak's "The Darkest Hour" is a new film out at seven with 82,684. In "The Darkest Hour" an alien race has attacked Earth and it is up to five young people to counter the invasion.

At number eight is the reworked Disney classic "Lion King 3D". This beefed-up version has thus far had 270,993 moviegoers relive the "Lion King" experience in glorious 3D. "Spellbound" follows with 46,231, putting it just short of 3 million admissions and "Pokémon the Movie: White - Victini and Zekrom" brings up the rear at ten with 30,116.
