[HanCinema's Film Review] Korean Weekend Box Office 2012.04.20 ~ 2012.04.22

HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2012.04.20 ~ 2012.04.22)

This past weekend saw Peter Berg's Sci-fi epic "Battleship" hold strong at number one with an unchallenged 517, 050 admissions, placing its total admissions count just below the 2 million mark. In a close race for second, Kim Hyeong-jun's "The Scent" managed to surpass the hugely popular "Architecture 101". "The Scent" came into the chart on the 11th and has continued to gain popularity ever since; it now has a total of 846, 017 admissions here in Korea.

Despite being dislodge by Kim Hyeong-jun's latest, "Architecture 101" is still set on overtaking "Unbowed" as the third highest grossing Korean film of the year. "Unbowed" currently occupies the number three position with 3,415,750 and Lee Yong-ju film isn't far behind with 3, 316, 692. From here on out the top ten is dominated by foreign entries, the first being the French film "The Intouchables (Intouchables)" as it continues to be a steady performer here in Korea. "The Intouchables (Intouchables)" has remained in the top four for over a month now and has collected 1, 635, 276 admissions during its run.

The Hollywood blockbuster "The Hunger Games" may have just be removed as the top film in the U.S, but it never managed to get going in Korea. "The Hunger Games" added just 52, 448 to its dismal total of just 585, 000. Many were holding their breath when it hit the Korean circuit, but local favourites and other international flicks outshined this popular adaptation. Wu Seon-ho's "Over my Dead Body" remains at six with just 50, 472, followed by "Titanic 3D" in seventh with 43, 381.

Disney's "Beauty and the Beast 3D" is also unmoved at eight and added 39, 949 to its modest total of 140, 558. At number nine is "The Ides of March", a film that is written, directed, and stars George Clooney. The film follows an idealist staffer on the election campaign in the U.S who gets a crash course on dirty politics. Lastly there's "Heartbreaker (L'arnacoeur)", romantic comedy from France and Monaco and is directed by Pascal Chaumeil.
