[HanCinema's Film Review] Korean Weekend Box Office 2012.04.27 ~ 2012.04.29

HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2012.04.27 ~ 2012.04.29)

There was never any doubt that Marvel's long awaited comic book film "The Avengers" was going to cause a huge stir at the Korean box office. This Hollywood blockbuster arrogantly snatched 64.30% of the ticket sales this past weekend, that's a whopping 1,342,584 admissions! It left Jeong Ji-woo's "A Muse" with just 15.90% and 389,803 admissions in its opening weekend, it's a decent start for this melodramatic romance, but it paled in comparison to the might of Marvel's gargantuan superhero flick.

Kim Hyeong-jun's "Architecture 101" is at third and is still basking in success, adding 157,166 admissions to its cause and even briefly reclaiming the number one spot during the week. That puts "Architecture 101" on 3,622,804 now and it moves past "Unbowed" as the third most successful Korean film of 2012. "The Scent" is down two places amidst all this chaos with 115,068, with its admission count more that halved from last week's efforts.

Last week's number one "Battleship" had little to say, folding from the pressure of another Hollywood dictator as well as a string of popular local flicks. "Battleship" claimed just 90,347 as opposed to last week's 517,045. At six is the Japanese animation "Crayon Shin-chan: The Storm Called Operation Golden Spy" by Soichi Masui, followed by the enduring French film "The Intouchables (Intouchables)". "The Intouchables" has been in top ten for six weeks running now, and during that time it had accumulated 1,688,258 admissions here in Korea.

Another ill-time Korean release to come out was Kim Tae-gyoon-I's "Spring, Snow" starring Yoon Seok-hwa. Kim Tae-gyoon-I's drew inspiration for this heart-warming tale from his own family, specifically his sister who battled cancer for 10 years. The film also marks Yoon Seo-hwa's return to the big screen after having been off it for 25 years. Rounding out the list now and "The Hunger Games" is still around at nine but just barely. This adaptation has not performed well in Korea, claiming just 604,809 admissions since its release. Lastly, Wu Seon-ho's "Over my Dead Body" brings the top ten to a close with 3,626, bringing it just shy of a million admissions since its release at the end of last month.
