[HanCinema's Film Review] Korean Weekend Box Office 2012.05.25 ~ 2012.05.27

HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2012.05.25 ~ 2012.05.27)

Min Gyoo-dong's comedy drama "Everything about my Wife" wasn't able to enjoy the number one position for very long. After claiming first position last week from Marvel's blockbuster "The Avengers", the film was once again outplayed by "Men in Black III", another hugely popular series out of the U.S. "Men in Black III" earned 1,063,774 admissions in its first weekend in Korea, marking a successful start to its efforts here in Korea.

"Everything about my Wife" continues to be the choice Korea film at the moment as the long weekend drew in the crowds to its screenings. The comedy drama stars Lim Soo-jung, Lee Sun-kyun and Ryu Seung-ryong and is going strong with an accumulated admissions total of 1,819,491. Marvel's "The Avengers" is still up there at three but its steam is sharply running out. That's nothing surprising considering this record-breaking action film already sits as the high grossing film released in Korea for 2012 with 6,740,893. That's about 1.6 million admissions more than its closest rival "Nameless Gangster". "The Taste of Money" is down one place as the MIB trilogy makes its play, pulling in 193,099, which is half compared to what it earned last weekend.

The Korean film "As One" stumbles down a place to settle at fifth, the weekend numbers now put Hyeon-seong's latest on 1,775,537 admissions. Yet another "Snow White" film is coming out of Hollywood. Rupert Sander's "Snow White and the Huntsman" offers a darker and tweaked version of the fair tale classic that might be geared more to older audiences. It had an admissions count of 71,732 and was followed by the Japanese animation "Inazuma Eleven Go The Movie", which attracted just 40,347 in its opening weekend in Korea.

"Machine Gun Preacher" is at eight and stars Gerard Butler, Michelle Monaghan and Michael Shannon. The film's premise is a topical one as a former drug dealer Sam Childers fights to help Sudanese children who have been forced into becoming soldiers. The other "Snow White" film "Mirror, Mirror" is at nine, adding just 10,443 to its total of 574,969, and Jeong Ji-woo's "A Muse" remains at the number ten with 5,471.
